SPORTING.

Nominations for tho Masterum Racing Club's Spring Meeting close to-day. Acceptances for the Gcraldine Racing Club's Spring Meeting are due on Tuesday. A Press Association en Lie message from Sydney says that The 31<-nk has been scratched for the Hill Stakes, to he decided at- the Ros p hill Meeting tomorrow. t Motion. Mime, and Queen Rcwa have ken scratched for the Avondale -Stakes to bo run to-morrow, and Gaiilnrd for the Guineas. While at exercise on Wednesday rooming "Palestrina crossed her legs and fell heavily. Siic injured her head and showed considerable soreness afterwards. She has been taken to Ashburton. but. may be unable to run in the Cup as intended. The Ashburton County Racing Club's Spring Meeting wDI be held to-day and to-morrow, and special trains have been arranged to leave C'hristchurch at 9.-0 a.m. each day, returning from Ashburum saleyards at 4.35 p.m. The hint race each day is timed to start at 11 .-''o a.m., and the last at 4.1.j p.m. lleaily good fields are engaged in all events, and in the Penscroft Hurdles with which to-day's programme opens. T.e Fort is likely to be most in demand. His third in the Grand National Hurdles was quite a taking effort, and in to-day's race tho extra, 2311> he will be earning should bring him nearer to the class he is now meeting. Agnola , and Radiac both ran creditable races in' ihe minor events at' Ricoarton, and may be Lo Fort's most dangerous opponents to-day. "WharfedaJe will be making his initial attempt over hurdles, and if he jumps well in company will run a> good race ulfder 9st 71b. Mountain Lion and Happy "Warrior will have the benefit of recent racing if saddled up for tho Bracmar Welter, bnfc there are a few three-year-olds, such as Count Cavour and Footfall, who may show some improvement on their two-year-old form. Fresco gallops fast for a few furlongs, and at tho minimum may run out a good seven furlongs. Besides Count Cavour, three other "ew Zealand Cup candidates are engaged in the race, these being IStrcam, Lucinotte, and Kukume, so the contest will be interesting in providing a line to longer distanoe races between this and November. In the Tinwald Handicap five New Zealand Cup horses are likely to be seen out. They are Pilliewinkie, Deucalion. Kilfane, Dame Straitlace, and Zero Hour. Of these Pilliewinkie and lvilfane may be In need of a race or two before being at their best, but if produced in anything approaching his autumn form the last-named "would be a particularly dangerous candidate for Tresham, Clareina,,, and Deucalion, who will probably be the publiY selections. Heraldry ran a particularly good race when winning the TToolston Handicap at the Grand National Meeting, and a reptition of that form would trouble anything else in the field for the Allenton Hack Race to-day. Markie with 7st '7lb should ran.well, but six furlongs may be a trifle too far for him. Retrospect, a filly by Autumnus—Telescope, will be making her first appearance in this race. She gallops well in her work, but her lack of experience may be a handicap to her. Sun "Up's second to Gardenia at Trentham and his subsequent form when he ran eoeond to Ilka at Riccarton is almost certain to send him out favourite for the Alford Hack Welter. His principal danger seems to lie in two other three-year-olds, Te Anau Lad and Escarpment, who haiye been acquitting themselves well in their work at Riccarton. There will L© a big field running in the Maiden Plate, and it contains the names of several who may be heard of i in better company within the next few ■weeks. Among them are Ghiekwheat, Deep Drive, Coch-y-bondhu and Winkje's Best. What the Spring Handicap lacks in point of numbers "finds ample compensation in the interest the event is evok-

It wili bo .set up in the jockeys' weighing room, and will face towards the neiv public stand, being visible to the general public through a large window. It will be in readiness for the Spring Meeting next month. The mechanism ii set in motion by elec.tricity by the starter's button, and the clock is" stopped by the official timekeeper when the horses reach the post. As in Australia, the fractions of seconds are recorded in quarters and halves-. .So far as is known, Glengarriff was not rehandicapped for the "Welter Handicap at Avondale to-morrow for his win at "Wanganui last week. Ho is engaged in the Avondale Guineas on the second day of tho meeting, in which race he will probably be ridden by H. Gray. It is understood Gray was engaged for Glengarriff before the announcement was made that ho would ride The Banker at Avondale. The English-bred mare Merit, who won a few races last season, has again been taken up by S. Reid at Trentham. Tho Otaki Maori Racing Club's Spring Meeting will be another fixture claiming attention to-morrow and, with the Spring Meeting at Avondale, it will be concluded on Monday. Useful fields are the rule and some interesting racing should result. Mr H. A. Wolfe ("Cardigan"), -who was acting sporting editor of the Sydney "Referee" during the absence in England of a Mr J. F. Dexter, and for 12 years has been sporting editor of the "Arrow" (Sydney), including three years on active service abroad, has aci cepted the position of Sporting editor of the Melbourne "Argus" and "AusI tralasian." Rich Prize beat Owlsqombe very badly over half a mile. TRere was something wrong with Owlscombe as the time, 51s, was slow. Her time would have been about 545. Corin'thic was given a short sprint. Petunia took lm 8s to sprint five furlongs, but it was evident that he -was not out to make fast time. Kukume gave Grim Joke a start of two lengths over a milo, and beat liim home in the smart time of lm 42 3-56. Thcjf were carrying light-weights, an 3 were ridden out. SYDNEY NOTES. GLOAMING WORKS WELL. (BY CABI.T.—PBESS ASSOCIATION —COPYRIGHT) (austbaxjan and n.z. cable association.) (Received September 18th, 8.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, September 18. Tho Monk remains in tho Hill Stakes. His name was wrongly omitted from the acceptors. Gloaming displayed all bis ofTi brilliance in a six furlongs gallop on the middlo grasss track at Randwick this morning. The first three furloues werp run in 3Cs, five in lm OJs, and six "in lm 14s. In 1920 ho covered tho same distance in lm 1325, but as he "then ran close to tho rails, to-day's gaJlop was considered equally as good, and has never been beaten Tinder similar conditions. The Hawk and Bosh did six furlongs in lm 16s, KAIKOURA RACING CLUB. NEW COURSE SOUGHT. There was a representative gathering present at the Suburban Hall on Tuesday night at a meeting convened for the purpose of receiving the Finance Committee's report on the proposed new racecourse.

Mr A. J. O'Malley, who presided, said the committee had concluded its duties, and it was for the meeting to decide what further steps should be taken. Ho read the following report: The Finance Committee appointed to enquire into tho question of securing a new racecourse beg to report as follows:—The terms on which, a suitable property can bo purchased are: «0 acres, section SH>, Kaikoura Suburban, at £45 per acre, £2250. Of this cum £2OOO can remain at interest at 6i per cent, (including sinking fund on £looo}. The amount of cash to be paid immediately is 41250. The rates on. tho property amount to £l3 10s 2d per annum. Tho rent for lease of unused portion of tho property will be about £67 30s, say at £1 5s per acre on the 50 acres. Tho interest and sinking fund will absorb £l3O per annum less rent £67 20s. To meet this liability, the gate charge might be increased to 2s 6d. Allowing for an attendance of 400 persons, this will bring in £SO. Should the proposed new course ba successful, additional horses may be induced to come to Kaikoura, and an increased Amount may be invested on the totalisator, thereby increasing the revenue of tho clubs. The County Council has advised that all buildings may be removed from the old course. The estimated cost of removal of buildings, and erecting fences and preparing track/ is set down at £4OO. By joint and several guarantee, the bank will consider an advance up to £SOO, which would prove the least expensive method of financing the proposition. Failing this, debentures could bo issued bearing 6 per cent. The sum of approximately £IOO has been promised as donations. The committee fully realise that a new course is essential if racing is to be carried on successfully, and believe the property on offer is .being submitted at a reasonable price under the special circumstances. If those "interested in tho sport will take ujj the matter with, enthusiasm, the committee is of opinion that there will bo no difficulty in financing tho proposition, and the clubs will be in possession of a good asset. To put the matter on a safe basis, £650 should be raised to pay the deposit of £250, end have in hand £4OO to prepare the course. To test the feeling of the meeting, the chairman moved that the matter be held in abeyance. On being put to the meeting, the motion was lost. A canvass was made of those in the room, and £lOl was promised, in addition to another £IOO from residents. A motion to the effect that the Tirice of tho property was considered too high was lost. • ILr P. Gibson moved that the canvassers bo empowered to close with tho offer ' if they secured what they considered sufficient funds. An amendment by Mr J. J. Hackle that, subject to the canvassers securing promises of £650, tbev be empowered to purchase the property, was carried; Messrs A. Eeenan and E. Gibson were appointed canvassers. I TROTTING NOTES. Tbe Addington course was in good order yesterday, and soma interesting work was accomplished. P. Kiddle's Cup candidate, Sheik, worked two milos at a sound pace.
