WAIHO RIVER.
I (special to "the pbess.") WELLINGTON, August 14. In the House of Representatives today; replying to a question by Mr O'Brien regarding the building of a 'bridge over the Waiho river, the Minister of Works stated that instructions were issued to proceed with the erection of this bridge, and offers were invited from settlers and others for the e.;r<.age of the timber. The lowest tender received was considered unduly high. Further efforts were then made to obtain reasonable offers, but without success. In November, 1923, arrangements were made for transport of the timber at a satisfactory rate, but- this was delayed during the summer as the Waiho river w;is unfordable for lorries. The present position of tho work is that all piles have been driven, and the erection of the superstructure is proceeding. It is anticipated that the 'bridge will be completed in about two or three months. The delay was owing to the difficulty of putting material on th& site at a reason:uble. cost, but no serious trouble to transport between W-aiho and Bruce Bay has been caused, as the Waikukupa ford is neither difficult nor dangerous and is easily negotiated except in high floods, which riso and subside very quickly.
