DROUGHT IN THE SOUTH.
ROOT CROPS TO SAVE CATTLE. "I would like this union to urge upon the Government the necessity for granting free railage for roots to South Canterbury and North Otago," said Air Studholme at the annual roee'ting of the Canterbury Shipowners' Union last night. "As has been mentioned in the House, there has been a drought in South Canterbury and North Otago, and there are thousands of head of cattle starving in those districts. In North Otago, I understand tbe animals are already dying. There have been only 15 points of rain during the last tew months, and tha-„ is nothing at all. The wheat is dying in the ground now. Roots would help the position materially, and I do not think it is asking too much of the Government to grant free railage for root feed. If the fanners are hard hit they will not be able to stand it.' Mr Studholme moved that a telegram be forwarded to the Government asking for free railage for roots, and that motion was carried.
