RANGIORA HIGH SCHOOL.

MEETING OF BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the Board of Governors of the Ilangiora High School Was held on Tuesday evening.. Present —Messrs R. Ball (chairman), W. A. Banks, W. Stalker, E. Marshall, C. "W. Bell, O. I. Jennings, and W. A. Rowse. A motion of sympathy wara passed with Mr Rowse in the death of his mother. It was: decided to ■ send a letter of sympathy to Mr H. Boyd, a member of the Board, in his ' illness. Correspondence was received from the Education Department requesting ' further particulars with reference to an application for £2306 16s 7d for drainage and a home science room, and pointing out that it could not grant a subsidy for certain materials purchased. The chairman, with Mr C. I. Jennings and the principal were appointed a sub-com-mittee to wait on the member for the district, Hon; D. Buddo, • MP., and Mr G. W. Forbes, M.P., in .reference to bringing under the notice of Parliament the unsatisfactory position of the school with regard to promised grants and subsides. The Minister of Education wrote that the regulations- governing incidental expenses had been amended to provide: "That where funds are available from the incidental grunt after other services have been provided for; a limited amount may be expended in school prizes, 'not exceeding a capitation of Is •6d on each scholar on the roll number, and not t:> exceed £25 in one school." It was his opinion that ■' public money could be expended to much better advantage in other directions than in school prizes. Miss: P. Jull was granted four months'leave from November lit, to enable her to visit California.

The Grounds Committee reported an application for more room for sports grounds, and suggested -taking souio of the agricultural experimental plots for football' and cricket grounds. Mr A. J. Ferguson, • science master, and Mr Beattie, waited on. the Board and strongly protested against the Board curtailing the experimental plois. Mr Ferguson said he much regretted the step, as it would put an end to the experimental work carried out by him.during the last six years, and would put an end to a system worked out of a rotation of crops. He . trusted the committee would not place sport, before experimental work, an more interest was being ta,ken in experimental farming than ever. Mr Beattie supported Mr Fergusson in his protest. Speaking from the point of view of sport, he said the grounds were not suitable for sports, noit being large enough. It wm derided not to do anything further with the suggestion. Messrs C. I. Jennings and J. Marshall were appointed to interview owners of adjoining property with a view of leasing it for new sports grounds. On. the motion of Mr C. I. Jennings, it was decided to apply to the Department for psrmirrsion to borrow £2OOO on the school endowments, to pay off all existing liabilities, the interest to be paid out,of endowment rent.' Morriss had been appointed relieving teacher until the end of ■ the year. The school-had been visited by Inspectors Parr and Bad:on, in order to consider recommendations for senior free places and leaving certificates: It was deemed to hold an exhibition of school work towards the end ot the year If was agreed to endorse the action of the committer in cancelling the appoint ment of Mr T. P. Grist, owing to hi-» not having taken it up.
