RAPID BRICKLAYING.

j A NEW INVENTION. , A now way of building brick houses quickly lias been devised by.Mr Brownlow, of Messrs Slack and Brownlow, Tonbridge, says the London "Morning Post." The work can be carried out bv unskilled labourers or ex-Servico men without previous training, and in a demonstration at Tonbridge recently unskilled men were laying bricks on a cottage in course of construction at the rate of from six to 10 per minute, or about 3000 per ordinary working; day. The system is standardised. When the site of a house has been arranged, uprights, preferably of angle iron, are fixed on the- ground level at the four corners, end upright tee pieces are fixed between these at intervals of ten feet or at shorter disiances whero required. These uprights are fixed quite plumb, and form the building line of the house. Boards, usually 10ft long by 7in deep and lin thick, slide insido these angle and te© uprights and form the face against which the bricks are laid.

Bricks placed against the inside of these boards will he perfectly plumb, being laid against, the straight building line. The joints of <»ach row of bricks are crossed, and as soon a3 three rows aro laid another board is slipped into position and another three rows of bricks laid against it, and this procedure is adopted up to the full height of the building. Another method is to .y.'ork with pno board ttrdy l , raising every three courses and resting it upon two naife pushed into the- joints. Internal walls and partitions and the chimneys are also built in exactly the name way. Concrete slabs or bricks, it is claimed, can bo laid in an equally rapid and efficient way by this process. One house per week, it is stated, could easfiv be out \t[> from foundations to roof by eight men, with one skilled supervisor, in this way.
