CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB.
GRAND NATIONAL MEETING
The Canterbury Jockey Club's Grand National Meeting will be advanced another stage to-day. Excellent acceptances were received yes torday, and winners appear to bo as hard to find as on the opening day. Tho principal event to-day is tho Grand National Burdlo Race, 'flic withdrawal of Income, Royal Star, and Lochella from the race has not reduced interest in the event to any appreciable extent, and the fourteen experienced hurdlers still engaged should provide a spirited contest. Nukumai, after winning the Jumpers'" Flat Race on Tuesday, has cemented himself moro securely in the public mind, and he is likely to carry most, money on the machine. Loch son, Omahu, Merry Singer, Sir Roseberry and Maunga will be dangerous rivals. Santiago even with his 121b penalty for winning the Trial Hurdles will not be friendless, nor will Penury Rose, who ran third in the Jumpers' Flat Race. The Beaufort Steeplechase has filled well and Sanforte, Mettle Drift, Passin' Through, and Silverton are a quartet that should receive any amount of attention when the field goes out. The minor raees are quite as interesting as the bigger events, and altogether the card is a highly attractive one. The day's proceedings will commence afc 11.16 a.m. and there will be a frequent tram service from Cathedral square from 9.30 a.m., while a special train service from the railway station commencing at 9.55 a.m. to the racecourse will be run.
