DRESSES AT RICCARTON.

Clothes certainly increase the complexity of life for women. Feminine racegoers were confronted yesterday .lorning with the stiff problem of deciding on suitable wear for a day that held baffling possibilities in the way of weather. The sky was overcast, and

there was no wind —a grey, warm, rather gloomy morning, that might presage an afternoon of warm sunshine or of sullen downpour. Most women decided, wisely, as it proved, to place faith in the amiability of the clerk of the weather, who behaved charmingly. As a result many beautiful frocks were seen to advantage on the lawn and in the grandstand. The salient feature of yesterday's frocking was undoubtedly the popularity of coloured embroidery. It was seen on dresses, hats, wrap-eoats, and even on bags, sometimes sparingly used —a mere touch of colour —but more often employed lavishly, so as to completely cover the sacque coat of a costume, or to decorate a dark-coloured skirt, worn .with a plain coat. The next most noticeable feature was the return to popularity of navy blue—chiefly gaberdines, garbireords, and fine serges. Black was again much- worn, and many smart frocks of varying shades of brown stood out pleasingly in the large crowd. The cloche hat continued to hold its own, but was often seen in its latest shape — with very high crown and slightly upturned brim.

Their Excellencies Lord and Lady Jellieoe, the Hon. Lucy Jellicoe, and Captain Curtis occupied the Vice-Regal box. On their arrival, they were received by Mrs George Gould, wife of the chairman of the committee of the club.
