Mr F. C. Clarke, chief clerk of the Aucklrod branch of the Standard Insurance Company, has received notice of transfer to the head office, Dunedin. Mr J. 8. Scanlon, of the Dunedin branch, will succeed Mr Clarke. Recent arrivals it the United Service Hotel included Messrs A. G. Pilmn(Masteiton), R. Hereford (Wellington), T E. Jackson, A. Jackson (Wellington), and E. H. Mair (England). Mr A. J. Baker, district engineer of the Public Works Department in Auckland, has been appointed inspecting engineer to the Department, with headquarters in Wellington. Mr Baker has been in Auckland nearly four years, and previously wa3 stationed in Dunedin and at Taumarunui. Mr L. B. Campbell, district engineer in Dunedin, will succeed him in Auckland.

Dr. H. E. De Groot, L.E.C.S., L.S.A., ship's surgeon of the Euahine, which arrived at Wellington on Saturday, is and ex-captain of the R. A.M.C., and had much army experience. He served in the Ashanti War, the Boer War, the Zulu Rebellion of 190G, and in the Great War in Egypt and France, besides being on the ambulance shipping transports at the end of the war. Dr. J. M. Steward, Bishop of Melanesia, who resumed his labours in the Solomon Group after a long absence in England, due" to ill-health, is at present at the missions headquarters at Siota. Adivices to hand by tho steamer Southern Cross, which arrived at Auckland yesterday from the-Solomons, state that JBishop Steward is much better in health. He will return to Auckland for the meeting of General Synod to be held next April. Superintendent W. Fouhy, on the eve of his retirement from tho police force, was met by a very representative gathering of citizens at Wanganui on Monday and presented with a well-filled wallet and a dinner set for Mrs Fouhy. The Mayor' (Mr Hope Gibbons) and a number of speakers testified to tho many sterling qualities of Superintendent Fouhy, and expressed regret that the time had come for him to retire. The Mayor said that Superintendent Fouhy had carried out his duties in a manner that had retained full confidence and respect of the whole community, and wished him a happy and prosperous time in Christchurch. Superintendent Fouhy and family will leave for Christchurch within the next few days.

Captain Leopold who will be remembered in connexion with patriotic tournaments held in Christohurch, and aiso in connexion with the training of troops and of members of the ponce force, during the war period, was a passenger by the Ruahine which arrived at Wellington on Saturday. Captain McLaglan and Mrs McL&glan 'Dr. Eleanor Baker, of Cbristchurch). arrived from Wellington yesterday. Tt is Captain McLaglan's intention to settle in Canterbury. He has retired from the Army and it is possible that he will devote much of his time to fostering athletics amongst tho rising .generation. He holds the world's championship for jiu jitsu, and while in England lie organised the first Jiu Jitsu Club at Oxford University, and was the first president of tho club. Captain McLaglan saw active service during the war in East Africa, Egypt, and France.
