PERSONAL; Mr R. Galbraith left for ."Wellington !a3t evening to attend ' the _ Harbour Boards' Conference. St. John Ambulance. . At a meeting of the St. John Ambulance Association. there were present: Messrs A. T. Smith .(chairman), -C. Eawkey, W. C. J. Osman, Mesdames Alington, Totty, Mathews, and Misses Stone and Watson. It wac decided to endeavour to form, a nursing division and to commence a ladies' home nursing class nezt week. Mesdames Mathews and Totty were appointed to arrange for' an instructor. Ashbnrton Presbytery.

At a meeting of the Ashburton Presbytery held yesterday there were present: "Revs, B. Dickie (Moderator)," R. McCully, W. Marshall, A. S. Morrison, and G.Hercus, Messrs E. Buchanan, A. Moore, J. Oakley, iind E. A. Lock. Two Assembly remits were received from the Rev. R. McCully, in which he asked that any minister who had served for 25 years be.given full membership in the courts of the Church, and that where the minister concerned agrees to. pay a double premium these years be. considered years of service. The remits were approved.

It was decided, that the mission to be conducted by the . Rev. Bissett be held at Wakanui, and that an application be made for a visit to Mayfield early next year, by which time a permanent minister would be installed.

The Bev. A. S. Morrison was appointed the Presbytery's'representative at the Christchurch Presbytery '& diamond jubilee celebrations, between October 11th and 13th.

The p'lans.and site of the .'proposed new St.. Andrew's Sunday Schdolwere approved. Mr E. Buchanan asked for the authority of the Presbytery to borrow up to £2OOO for the erection of the Sunday school on the section across the road from the .church. He stated that the plans had been approved by the congregation, and the new building would Cost about £SOOO, of which there was £I6OO in hand and £4OO promised. The plans were approved, and permission wa3 given to borrow the necessary money.

Trotting Club. The following arc the nominations, which closed on Monday, for-the election of officers ior tho Ashburton Trotting Club:—President, Mr H. F. Nicoll; vice-presidents, Messrs W. Bryant and F. B. Kobilliard; hon. treasurer, Mr E. G. Shearman; committee, Messrs F. B. Kobilliard, J. T.. Thomas, and A.J. Millichamp; stewards, Messrs J. Smith, E. B. Newton, E. F. Nicoll, S. Madden, D. McDonnell, : "H. Morri3, A. J. Millichamp, J. T. Thomas, A. J. Nicoll, and F. W. Seldon. As the nominations do not exceed the number required, the above will be duly ele-ted.

Miniature Eiflo Shooting. The weekly shoot of the' Willowby Rille Club was held on Monday. A trophy presented by Mr C. White was won by L. Pratley, with 34-1-35. The "Hotty'' button wa3 won by H. Mitchell, with a possible after tieing with W. Tate, H, Day, and L. Pratley. Some of the best scores were:—W. Tate, H. Mitchell, L. Pratley, H. Day 34, A. Cass, P. Stiven, F. Greenall 33, T. Mackay, D. Mackay, W. Smith, S. Pearson, J. Parsons 32, J. Sutherland, W. Smith, sen., 30.

Coldstream. "On Friday night a highly successful dance was held in the Coldstream "Whare," the proceeds of which are to be devoted to tho Library _ Fund. More interest is being taken in tho library every year, thus a supply of tho best books is essential, and it ia gratifying to see that the demand is being met with. In spite of the prevalence of colds in the district just at present, tho attendance at the dance was large, - and tho Library Fund benefited by over £6. Mr E. J. Martin (chairman of the Settlers' Association) and Mr H. Simmons (chairman of the Library Committee) thanked thoso present for their support. During the evening a dainty supper was handed round by'the Library Committee. Thanks arc due to Mr A. Beatty, who supplied the music, and also to Mrs D. Shaw and Mr. W. Scott, who supplied extras. Mr H. Price was M.C.

Already a few lambs are to be seen in some of the paddocks, and by the end of the month lambing will be in full swing. Although too much rain is not desired at the present time, a little would be most' beneficial. All flocks in the district are looking extremely well. The wattle trees surrounding the Coldstream homestead are just; breaking into their blaze of ,yellow, and in a few days the plantations will be,relieved of their dark, wintry' appearance.

Gdneral . News. Mr Pike,. telegraph and telephone engineer, visited-Ealing on Monday afternoon iii connexion with the linking up of a number of 'farm and other houses with the Hinds Telephone Exchange. In addition to those jwho hava already made application for telephone services, a considerable number of others are contemplating doing so at an early date.'.' The first stretch' of road under the Asliburton County Council's new road construction policy will be undertaken a'in.ost immediately. It is on tho Winslow-Hinds road, and is a considerable length of highway which has only been formed and shingled on one side, the other side being a rough grass track. Mr A. A. Fooks, the Council's newly-appointed roads construction and roads maintenance officer, has completed the survey work, and tenders have been called.
