There is only one cemetery in Kaikohe (says the Auckland "Star"), and the bodies of both Europeans and Maoris are buried there. With the growth of population the Town Board realises that a separate burial ground will ere long be needed, and they have secured for that purpose a reserve on the Parahirahi block, three-quar-ters of a mile east of the township. Before the ground can be used as a cemetery it will have .to be cleared of scrub, ploughed, fenced, and grassed. A road will have to be made, and a stream bridged. In a letter to the Board, Archdeacon Hawkins writes that it is the desire of the Maoris that European burials in the present cemetery should be stopped immediately, bat as he recognises some difficulty may be experienced, he suggests that the Maoris might be asked to allow the Kaikohe cemetery to be kept open for Euronean burials until, say, the end of the year.
