SCIENTIST HONOURED.
ITi© honorary degree of Correspondent has been conferred upon Professor Sir T. W. Edgeworth David of Australia by the Geological Society of America, lor his eminent services in t>l« cause' of geology. This great honour, conferred by the leading geological society of America-, w*i-s bestowed upon Professor David in common with five other world-famous geologists, ruimsly, 'Dt. J. J. Sederholm, Director of the Geological Survey of Finland, toieminent services in tbo cause, ot generril geology; Dr. T. A. A, Lacroix ?> thegreat French petrologist; Dr. A. Smith Woodward, bji English palaeontologist; 'Dr. Gustr.f A. F. Molengraafr, stratigraphies! and structural geologist, "University cf Belft, Holland, and Dr. Bonjiro Koto, of Tokyo Imperial University, the doyen of Japanese geology. Professor David's services to the of geology and science goneraliy may bo summarised briefly in that bis geology of the Mattlaiid coalfield is a classic; that he has. founded a flchool of geology which is widely and most favourably known throughout the world; and that the second great PanPacific Congress, held in Melbourne and Sydney in 1923 owed its success in a very great nioaeure to his indefatigable efforts in arousing and maintaining interest throughout the Pacific in this I movement. The sum total of his work l .n.nd of tbo viu-ious honours which havo ibeen conferred ma him by GovernI nients and learned societies are too niunorous to mention. Among these, however, may be mentioned his emin'ont war servicer, and the expedition to i Antarctica with the first, recorded as- ' cent of Mount Erebus.
