CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB.
GRAND NATIONAL MEETING. STEEPLECHASE DAY. All eyes will be turned on Ricearton to-day, when a commencement will he made'with the Grand National Meeting, a fixture that is always popular with the whole sporting community. Weather conditions at the time of writing are ideal, and tho recent rains have been in no way detrimental to the course, which is in the best possible order. Hie race of the day will ho the Grand National Steeplechase, the cross-country blue riband event of New Zealand, and this is likely to provide one of the greatest 6teeplechasing contests ever witnessed at JKiccarton. Tie fences are big and solid, and only a real steeeplechaser has a chance of getting round the country. There are a number of this type engaged in today's race, and the jumping should b© as good ae ever before. x ourteen horses still remain in, and the four topweights Oakleigh, Pamplona, Caratfock, and Lochella are likely to find most favour with backers. Oakleigh s public form during tub past few weeks has been nothing to enthuse over, but the aged gelding has improved a great deal of late and with his experience over the Ricearton country and his well-known staying ability, he is'likely to be on hand at the finish. He has won the raoe twice before, and a third win, though a great performance* may be quite within his capabilities. Pam- i plona has shown that he can get oyer the fences all right, and many expect him to win, though he was beaten in a ding-dong struggle at Wellington. Carawock is as fit as hands can_ make him, and with A. B. Wormald in the saddle, he will lack nothing in the way of horsemanship. He has also proved his ability to jump the big Riccarton country, and the same may be said of Lochella, who should not) find the list ho is asked to carry a prohibitive weight. Sanforte has. a Wanganui Steeplechase to his credit, but his form of late has not been good, and First Line, though a safe conveyance, is an old gelding and probably past his best. Of the light-weights Fireblight appears to .hold the best prospects. A large field is likely to go to the post for the Winter Cup, a race over a mile, thait takes a lot of winning. Red Wink, Boadicea, Bonnie Winkie, and Arch Salute are all much in public favour,- and what beats this quartette "Should be handy at the finish. Boadioea, especially, has been doing good track work and she will have many supporters for the big racer. • The day's programme will commence at 11.1 a.m. and there will be a frequent tram service from Cathedral square from 9.30 a.m., while a. special train service from the railway station commencing at 9.55 a.m. to thfe racecourse will be run.
