UNEMPLOYMENT.
BELIEF WORK. • Certain work for the relief of unemployment was proposed at the meeting. of the City Council last night. The Reserves Committee reported that they had given consideration to the recommendation of the Council, to provide work for men out of employment. and asked for permission to anticipate the estimates regarding Smkrt's -Pond. There was a sum of £IOO on the estimates for the purpose of fencing and levelling, -and the cleaning out of the pond. That could very well be done as a relief work. The Committee could' also, with advantage, erpend £IOO on the improvement of the river-banks at Dallington. and authority was asked to put the work in hand. Cr. ( E. .H. Andrews said that the "Returned Soldiers' Association would subsidise the latter grant £1 for£l in' order that employment might be found for. soldiers. Cr. W. B. 1.-eadky said the U.S.A. had' £IOO in hand, and would probably be able to grant another £IOO later. Tiio Council adopted the recommendation of the committee The Works Committee reported that eight 'men had- been fo*ind employment cleaning' bricks at the Concert Hall site. The committee regretted that it has no works of any magnitude that could be put in hand at th 6 present time, with a view to relieving unemployment.
