SUPREME COURT. PROBATES GRANTED. Probates of the wills of the following deceased persona in the Christchurch district have been granted to the Public Trustee by the Supreme Court at Wellington:—Thornaa Adkiason Gates, lata of Christchurch, gentleman; Kate Bromley, late of Christchurch, married woman; Sarah Atiti Brankin, late of Christchurch, widow. Administration of the estate of Martha Spillane, late of Christchurch, married woman, was also granted to the Public Trustee. PRISONERS FOR TRIAL. Tlio following prisoners will com© up for trial at the criminal sittings of the Supreme Court, to be held in Christchurch, commencing on Monday, August 18th:— Thomas Moody—Alleged breaking and entering and theft by day, at Christchurch. Thomas Moody and James Joseph Boyce— Alleged theft and breaking and entering by day, three charges (Christchurch). Wilfred Roland Wildey—Alleged forgery (Christchurch). Walter John Chamberlain—Alleged indecent assault (Christchtirch). Minnie Brown—Alleged theft from person (Christchurch).. William ■ Gordon Hutchison—Alleged theft (Christchurch). David Goodsir—Alleged possession of forged banknote (Ashburton). Owen Patrick B'rosnahan—Alleged theft (Christchurch). MAGISTERIAL. MONDAY. (Before Messrs J. H. Seager and C. S. Bingham, J.P.'s.) DRUNKENNESS. John Fitzpatrick, who pleaded guilty ,to a chrege of drunkenness for the third time within £ix months, was convicted and fined £l, in default 48 hours' imprisonment.' Five male statutory first offenders were each convicted and fined £l, the amount of their bail. A first offender was convicted and fined £l, the amount of his bail. Another first offender, who had spdnt a nigh,t in gaol, was convicted and - fined 10s. Joseph Madden, 27 yews of age, was convicted and fined 10s, in default 48 hours' imprisonment, on a charge of drunkenness. A lurther charge of having procured liquor during the currency of a prohibition order, which was also preferred against him, was adjourned till August 20th. REMANDED. Jessie Lavinia Stevenson, 35 years of age, was remanded to appear to-morrow. on a charge, of having failed to comply with fEe terms of her release from probation. A DRUNKEN DRIVER. Frank William ißrightling, 52 years of age, pleaded guilty to a charge of having been lound drunk while in charge of a motor-car. Constable S. Mcßurztey said that at 3.20 o'clock on Saturday afternoon he arrested the accused in Fitzgerald avenue. There was a considerable amount of traffic on the road at the time, and the accused had been so drunk that he hid been holding the tramcars up.

"Something has got to be done to put it down," said Acting-Senior-Sergeant A. G. (Juartermain. "Men are being killed every day through the recklessness of these men." Brightling was convicted and fined £5 and costs.

THEFT. Robert Henry Edgeworth, . a middle-aged man,*pleaded tot guilty to a charge of having stolen man's bicycle, valued at £2, the property of some person or persons unknown. Constable A. Allen, who had interviewed the accused, said that Edgeworth had first told him that he had been lent the bicycle by his brother David. Later he said that he had bought the machine off a man whose name he did' not know. Chief-Detective I T. Gibson said that the owner of the cyclo wis certainly not Edgeworth, but the owner could not be found. The accused had not been put of gaol very long, but he had been drinking very heavily ever since his release. Edgeworth was oonviotcd and sentenced lo two months' imprispxunent with hard labour. Edgar), claimed from George Ccmmins, butcher, Rolleston (Mr C. S. Thomas), for . the sum of £2O, being the value of a sheep dog belonging to the plaintiff andwrongfully destroyed by the defendant on June 29th.

A BUSINESS TRANSACTION. Annie Piojkett, wife of James Pickett,' 799 Colombo; street (Mr H. S. J. Goodman), sued Francis C. H. Baahiord, 77 Harman street, Addington, gardener (Mr Godfrey), for the sum of £23 14s. She alleged he had received £2O from one Arthur Jennings for her use, and she sought to recover that sum and £3 14s interest. The plaintiff said that the dispute arose out of the purchase by her of a property at the corner of Hastings and Johns strce'.s, Sydenham, from Bashford, . the defendant, and the sale of it by her to Jennings for the sum,of £575, which was £45 more than she gave for it. . The Magistrate said that there evidently bad been a" niSsund'erstanding, and judgment would have to be given for plaintiff in ' equity and good conscience with costs.

LABOURER SUED. Jones. Bros.; Ltd., cycle agents, Christchurch (Mr R. W. Lascelles), claimed from John Shannon, labourer, Hokitika (Mr A. TT. Patterson), the sum of £B9 4s 4d for arrears •of hire from' February to September, 1923, due under an agreement dated September 13th, 1922, made between the plaintiff and the defendant in respect of a Barley-Davidson motor-cycle. The case was adjourned - for the taking of further evidence.

IN OTHER PLACES. ALLEGED GAMING HOUSE. (PSESB ASSOCIATION TELECB AIT.) - TAIHAPE, August 11. The police on Saturday night raided the premises, of- Herbert Reuben iloore, billiard booth proprietor, with the result that ten people appeared .in . Court this morning. Moore was charged .with keeping- a common gaming house. ; Archibald Wadsworth was charged with assisting, to conduct it, and eight others were charged with being found on the premises. All were remanded for a week, bail;being..fixed at f 100 for Moore and Wadsworth, and £5 each for the others.
