KAIKOURA. Mr and Mrs James Carter, who are leaving Kaikoura, •were the recipients of presentations from members and friends of St. Peter's Anglican Church. The presentati6ns (a silver tea service and clock) were made by the Eev. C. F. Saunders, who spoke in praiseworthy terms of the excellent services rendered to the church by the departing guests. Messrs J. Davidson, S. Hitchcock, and F. H. Warner also eulogised the work'of Mr ar..d Mrs Carter, who were wished success and happiness in their new sphere of operations at Marton. Mr and Mrs Cartel expressed their thanks for the kind sentiments expressed by the speakers, and for the handsome presentations. During the evening songs were contributed by Miss Sincox, Miss I. Stubbersfield, Messrs Quelch and J. Carter; monologues by Mr Warner, and a euphonium solo by Mr W. Perrin. The annual meeting of the Kaikoura Swimming Club was held on Friday, Mr P. Smith presiding over a good attendance. The balance-sheet submitted showed a credit balance of £ls. A

vote of thanks was passed to the ladies for supplying afternoon tea, to Mrs Baker for supplying hot water, and to , Mr P,, Smith for his, services to the' club. The secretary undertook to interview the county engineer regarding the amount of foreshore under the jurisdiction of the club. It was decided to make the opening day November Ist, and to have- jx flannel dance in celebration of the occasion. It was also decided to obtain two cylinders for a new raft. $ ■ HANMER SPRINGS. At the annual congregational meeting of the Hanmer Springs Presbyterian

Church, the Rev. J. Gemmell, who occupied the chair, reported on the year's work. The secretary and treasurer reported that the finances were in a satisfactory state. Votes of thanks were expressed to all who had assisted during the year. At the conclusion of the meeting a social was held in the Church Hall, and was well attended by members and their friends. Competitions and games helped" to pass a pleasant hour. Supper was provided by the ladies of the congregation. TAI TAPU. A queen carnival has been inaugurated in aid of the Anglican ' Church funds, and the voting results up till August Sin are as follows: —For Tai Tapu, Dorotliv Jones '45 votes, Rosie Ware 39, Kathleen Brown 21, Phyllis Blowers 20, Marjorie Arnst 20, Kathleen Kimber 5, Nellie Morten 4, Lorna Dowker 4, Marjorie Kimber 3. _ _ The progressive euchre party held in the Town Hall on Friday evening, in aid of the Tai Tapu Lawn Tennis Club, proved most successful. The grand march, led by little Mae Gundry and Douglas Hooper, gave a chanoe to the individuals to display their costumes to advantage. The judges, Mrs Andrews and Mrs Tiltman, had a very difficult task to choose the best, but eventually the following were selectee 5 : Most original, Gertie Chapman (Baby Mine); Neil Campbell (Cowboy). Mr W. Wright's special prize for prettiest costume was awarded to Veronica Doriohue (Folly), while the boys' was won by Anthony Rogatski (King Henry Vm.)/ The prizes were presented by Mrs Timpson. Among those in fancy dress were: Jack Bentley (Prince), Hannah Smith (Pierrette), Myra Smith (Winter), Duncan Smith (Pierrot), Duncan Grieve (Clown), Gladys Grieve (Toueh-Me-Not), Kitty Hannan (Red Cross Nursed, Mildred Wolfrey (Poppy), Bryda Gundry (Roses), Ada Smith (Registered Letter),. Marjorie Donohne (Grasshopper), Ita Bentley (Daffodil), Hazel AldridgeV (Bedtime), Ada and Rita Aldridge (Two Little Girls in Blue), Lizzie Lamb (Gipsy), Blanche Grieve (Scotch Lassie), Rita Wright (Powder and Puff)," Mae Gundrv (Fairy). The children's session closed at .9 p.m. when the floor was cleared for the adults, who spent an enjoyable enrening in dancing. The musicians were Miss L. Woods • and Messrs E. Najimann, J. Chapman. MEAD. Mr 1 J. Shannon met with a painful accident on Sunday through being thrown from a motor-cycle. While travelling along the road near the Mead School the cyclie skidded, and Mr Shannon was thrown violently on his face, with a result that his no«e was broken and his face badly lacerated. METHVEN. The Methven Ladies' Hockey Club sent a junior team to Ashburton on Saturday for the six a-side tournament. Although,tliey put up a good-fight, their efforts did not meet with success, and they evidently require a little more practice together. Fine weather prevailed for the weekend, and some or the rain experienced during the past week in other parts would have been welcome in this district. The majority of residents in the township are carting water. The Golf Club held another competition on Saturday. This was an- 18hole stroke handicap, and was fop a prize given by Mr W. JV Cooklley. J. F. Stone was the winner. V-" The Football Club held: a seven a-side practice on Saturday, in view of choosing a team to take" part in the coming tournament at Geraldine.
