BALL AT SHEFFIELD.

The Sheffield Town Hall, was a scene of a very successful function on Friday evening when the bachelors of the district held their annual ball, which proved: one of, the best dances ever held in Sheffield. The hall , was effectively decorated with evergreens and 'streamers;of thebacholors': colours, blue and white. Mr Jackson's Jazz Orchestra, from Christchurch, supplied the music, which was much enjoyed. The duties .of secretary were carried out by Mr J. W.-Green in a most capable manner, and Messrs 11. Black, L. Jenkins, and A. Townshend •were masters of ceremonies. About one ■ hundred couples took part ; in the Grand March, which was led by Miss Connie Sealey and' Mr. J. W. Green. The Sumner Life-Saving. Club held a very successful social in the Sumner Town Hall, where a progressive euchre •tournament was followed by a Bhortprogramme of musical items. There was. a good attendance. Mr T. Newburgh, the chairman of the Soeiety, awarded the prizes won to' Mrs Johnston, Mr C. Newman, Mrs C. M. Koswell, and Mr E. Allen. He stated that the additions to the present pavilion were being commenced at once. Both the ladies' and the gentlemen's weekly wrorking bees were providing splendid material for the stalls which would be opened at the forthcoming fete. He concluded by specially thanking .those who. .had contributed items daring the evening, these being Mesaamcs H. W. Heslop, Wathew, | and Cook, Misses B. Brown, M. -Allen, and Messrs. C. S.
