POLITICAL NOTES
(special to ",zhs peess.") The Meat BoaitL In the course of his speech in the Financial Debate this evening the Hon. A. D. McLeod alluded to the recent allegations concerning the Meat Board, and said he proposed to say something in defenee of his friend Mr David Jones, who was in London at present. He considered it unfair to attack a gentleman who had made an honest endeavour to do the best for the Board he had been appointed chairman of and for primary producers. As one interested in the meat industry for many years, Mr McLeod said that never in its history had there been two years with such an even set of prices on the London market as in the past two years. He challenged contradiction on that point. ICo enquiry could take place until Mr Jones was buck in New Zealand. Mr Jones had been communicated with, and had replied to the following effect: "If it is imperative in your opinion that I should return to Now Zealand, I will leave by the first boat. Kindly supply particulars. I have arranged late in September to meet the Dairy Board representatives and meat representatives in London, and make final arrangements for freight contracts for next year." "I am not prepared to say," concluded Mr McLeod, "that holding the important position he does as chairman of the Meat Board he should leave London until satisfactory arrangements are made for next year's overseas freights." Junior High School as O&m&ru. la the House to-day, in roply to Mr Macpherson (Oamaru), the Hon. C. J. Parr said it was proposed to establish a junior high school at Oamaru, but if jhere was any local objection to the school, he could quite easily place it elsewhere, as no fower than 34 centres had asked for this class of school, which was everywhere endorsed by education authorities.
