TJ;e cncaal sieeticg: oi tho AihourtoJ County Racing Club "as held yesterday afternoon, vrhen Jir B. B. Mc»'ton presided over a Ein-il! of nieabers. Tho commit'ee's anmiil re~oit w-aa «s follows: Tho financial success which is duo to a j club situated in such a flourishing a-cd cen- , tral district as ours has been considersD-y 1 marred by the heivy taxation :rap-'scd by ; the Government. Although economy has been practised as i»r as possible, and the st&kc3 reduced by £690 as compared vriti-t la>st season, the club has not been able to hold its own financial!". The two race meetings held during the season suffered a 2 033 cf £3BB, and in faco oi thi3 the Gorernment were, in taxes, paid the sum of £3560 5s od. Both l-acc meetings Provided some excellent sport, but owing to tho railway strike, tho committee vrero compelled to abandon the Miiy Meeting. Permission ws3 obt«in©di to race on June 20th and 21st, and tv.-o steeplechase events "vcrc- included in the programme, the innovation being 1 fully justified by the support jfiven by the ovnera and tho interest shown by the public. Tho inclusion of the steeplechase events necessitated the forming of a, steeplechase course. This was done at the Co3t of about £6O. A a the jumps and fittings are permanent, further expenditure will be. sma.ll. During ] the year the club lost the support of several valued members ivho died, namely, Messrs 'i'. Bullock, T. Blackley, A. C. McDonald, and J. Bonifant, all of whom, evinced practical interest in tho club's affairs. A debit balance of £397 9s 3d was disclosed in the general account. Receipts during tbs yoar_ amounted to £6768 lis 4d and -expenditure to £7164 Cs 7d. As explained in the report, the loss was largely duo to tha high taxation imposed by the Government. The principal items of receipts -were: Members' subscriptions £153 Cs 6d, nominations and acceptances £1215 3s, admission £769 as, race cards £260 10s, totalisator £3956 19s, ifente £165 13s, and donations £IBO ss. Under expenditure tho principal items were: Stakes £4615, salaries and wages at racs meetings £3SS 3s 2d, secretary £l5O, printing,, advertising, and stationery £l9B Us l*d; Government taxes £3608 10s lOd (less 17c collected from owners and dividends), and improvements £65 17s Bd. The esseis were a bourn to exceed liabilities by £37 7s 3d. 'jtho chairman, in moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, said he was very disappointed in not being able to present a better statement of the year's work. He .really hoped that after the 'Way tho owners and trainers supported . the last meeting, the club would have made a small profit, or at IpsLSt have held its own. 1 Record . nominations and acceptances had been received, and the. attendance quite fair, but in spite of everything, the'ciuo showed a loss over the meeting. This year the railway strike compelled the club to aban-don-its Aninmn Meeting, so a Steeplechase jifeeting traa held in the winlcr, consequently the club had to make a steepicchftso eod*«© andi erect fences. I 1 rem a a porting point of view the meeting w»s- cuite 'a' 'gilocess, and provided excellent' sport, so much. EOithat . it had. been Suggested to in-»-elude the steeplechase events in future proSeveral., necessary improvements were regiiired. The stand and buildings wanted, repairing and painting; ialao the railings round tho course, but this would have to' stand over until the club was in a better financial position. It was very disheartening tryipg to run a race meeting ■reader the present burden of taxation. He was sure none ■wanted to make the club a money-maldng concern, but they would like to make sufficient profit to give lair etakea to encourage the better clae3 of racehorse and have sufficient funds left to keep the course and buildings in proper repair. He regretted very much "this was the last annual meeting at which they would have Mr Poois with them as secretary, after 25 years' faithful service. He waa euro memi bers would find it hard to fill his I but waa glad he was not leaving the district. > Jb J3. P. Kicoll, in seconding the adoption of the Topqrt and! balance-sheet, eaid monwers were not responsible for the present position. Every country club was badly crushed by tho burden of taxation, liven if only 1 per cent, of the tax was romi?SflJ2, the club wouTd benefit and manage to keep on the right sjdo <>f tho ledger. The officials had tried hard tomaJto tho meetings successful. He vraa sorry that Such a valuable man's services were being lost with the resignation of Mr Fools, -He had proved himself a good servant.- and worked hard in tie interests of the cport. . Mr J. referred to the Gaining Bill, and said that it seemed to him that the Bill would have been far more effective it divided into sections, as hx» wis cure that a number of those in Parliament wculd vote for relief for the country, clubs, but not for the Gaming Bill in its entirety. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. The following officials were elected for the ensuing year:—Committee: Messrs J. C. N. Grigg, J. Hndlay, J. H. Grig?, H. Morrk, and J. S. Xiaing.
