FIRES.
The fire in the city on Thursday evening did considerable damage to much valuable stock in the Minerva Salon over the premises occupied by Jones, McCrostie Co., Ltd., on the corner of Manchester and Cashe! streets. The building in which the outbreak occurred is portion of the estate of the late Thomas Bassett. _it is insured in the Commercial Union Office for £SOOO. The Canterbury Woollen Company's stock is insured in the Eagle, Star and British Dominion offices, the policies being for £ISOO, £6-50 and £250. Miss Fuller's stock is insured for £2OO in the Australian Piwiroial and Southern Union offices. Shortly before 7 o'clock last evening the City Fire Brigade received a call to tlie Greater Crystal Palace Theatre. The alarm was a false one, and evidently the person who gave it was under the impression that the building was on fire because of smoke coming from the boiler-house.
