(BY CABLE —PEESS ASSOCIATION —COPYRIOHr) (AUSTRALIAN AND K.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION.) MELBOURNE. July 31.
The bank robber at Canterbury secured £5(33. The telephone wires liad been out inside the bank, apparently by someone with an intimate knowledge of the premises. After Chittock fired the first Eliot, the intruder closed with him and a desperate struggle followed. Furniture was upset and smashed, and eventually the revolver was wrenched from the teller's hand. Tho burglar fired two shots, wounding Chittock in the felt hand and left toot, and compelling him to release his hold. The robber then rushed to tho counter and secured the notes, escaping over the fenco. Ho dropped 28 single notes, which were found later. Tho manager, who had gone out to try to get into telephone touch with the head office, returned after tho struggle was over and found Chittock wounded. Tho polios were called quickly to tli© scene, but failed to discover any glue. Chittock, who is a returned soldier, was conveyed to hospital. His woundsare not serious. Neighbouring shopkeepers heard tho shots, hut thought the bank employees were indulging in a little practice, It ie evident from the manner in which the telephone wires were cut, and the alacrity with which the robber seized the teller's revolvers, that he liad some knowledge of the hanking premises. An interesting fact is that at the Commercial Bank in tho neighbouringsuburb of Glenferrie, the manager, Mr 'Berriman, was killed in somewhat similar circumstances laast year. The scene of the robbery is '" tllc centre of the business premises of Canterbury.
