Commenting on the discussion which took place ai> the City Council on Monday evening on th© subject of main highways, Mr J. D. Bruce, the South Tsutnd counties' representative on the Main Highways Board, remarked to a reporter that ho thought some of the speakers took a rather narrow view of tho matter in expressing the opinion that the cities were being called upon to pay for roads in the country. As far as ho could make out the larger proportion of car owners resided in the country. The Main Highways Board assisted, in respect of declared roads, to the extent of one-third; but residents in the country would be called upon still, as ratepayers, to find the whole cost of the other roads. In addition, they wonld be called upon, like other oar owners, to pay the impost on motorists. The declared roads served the cities quite as much as country residents and his view was that a city was served by tho roads leading to it and the more good roads there mn leading to a cifrr the better ft was for the city.
