The ladies of St. George's Hospital are making strenuous efforts to enable the executive to call for tenders for the new building before .the end .of the year. In this connexion they are holding a gigantic cake stall in the foyer of Everybody's Picture Theatre on Saturday' morning. ■- Flowers, home-made bread, marmalade, joints of meat, and sweets will also be on sale. Those in charge will be' Mesdanies F. Hiatt, F. Fairclough, E. Bayley, and Miss Way. The fourth of a series of social evenings was held in the schoolroom by the committee of the East Christchurch Swimming Club, working in conjunction with the school committee onSaturday evening.' * The euchre and dance evenings conducted by the above . committee axe proving highly successful, and Saturday evening's function was attended by a large crowd. A feature of the evening was the fact that bOi,. cards and dancing commenced at 8 p.m. Reid's peerless Orchestra, sup-; plied' excellent music. The winners in: the. card section were: La-dy's, Mrs Smith Ist, men's, Mr Kenna Ist, and oonsolation prizes were obtained ,by Mrs Ryfie and Mr Cumtnings. Mr C. Bryant presented the prizes. "On Saturday evening, at St. Chad's schoolroom,,the members of the Men's Social Club held a "ladies' evening." During the course of the evening, the Rev.. E. E. Maiden presented the secretary of the club with a gilded matchbox as a memento of the lighting of the fire in the new fireplace.. Amongst those-present were -several members of the Royal Star Entertainers, who contributed the following items': —Songs, Miss Rita Campbell, Messrs George Campbell and George Dearman; reci- ! tationß, Miss Isobel Dearman and Mr Edward Cox. An exhibition of club- ' swinging was given by Miss Ella Campbell, and mental telepathy by -Messrs Edward Cox and George Dearman; saxophone solo, Mr E. Patten. Accompaniments were, played by Miss Mooar and Miss Rita Campbell. Woodland's Orchestra played excellent music for the dancing. An extra, played by Miss Mooar, concluded a most enjoyable evening.
