DRAINAGE EXTENSION.
CONTRACT THROWN UP. RETICULATION CONTRACT LET. The stale of things existing at Woodham road, as described in yesterdays issue of "The Press," has led the contractor, Mr J R. Roots, to notify the Drainage Board that he is not able to carry out the No. 10 sewer contract, Linnood, owing to unforeseen difficulties making the continuance of work impossible, and quicksand are the difficulties which Mr Roots has found insurmountable; in addition there is the possiblejlamago to.waterpipes and to property generally likely to result from attempts to cope with the peculiar nature of the ground met rtith. Workmen under the direct control of the Hoard will continue the work at W oodhara road to-day. Mr Waiter Hill, chairman of the Board, stated to a reporter yesterday that trouble of a similar character was not unusual, and was not unexpected. He added: "The trouble is not likely to be verv serious." Of course, there mil be water to contend with in nearly all the trenches, and perhaps in some, as in this, there will be quicksand." It was considered unlikely that the trouble encountered at this particular snot would extend very far, and he was "inclined to believe that the contractor lud merely struck a bad hole and perhaps had lost heart. However, the Board would now carrv on the work, and he did not think it would have any great difficulty in carrying it to completion. Messrs B. Moore and Son, Edee'ware road, St. Albans, have secured the contract for the sewer reticulation of St. Andrew's square (including Searell road, St. Andrew's square. St. Albans and Bell street) at £3419 0s Bd.
