HELMORE'S LANE.

BEAUTIFUL TREES PRESERVED. It will be recalled that towards the end of last year alarm was taken that the widening of Helmore's lane, Fendalton, one of the typically English byways in the vicinity of the city, would result in the destruction of some very line trees growing there. About the time mentioned members of the Waimairi County Council mot representatives of the Christchurch Beautifying Association and discussed on the spothow best to preserve the attractiveness of the lane. The proposals mad© by the Association —that the trees should remain and that the footpaths should be made behind the trees —were adopted and given effect to by the County "Council. The w-ork referred to has just been completed with the exception of con-, structing the side channels. The widening of the lane has resulted in the telephone poles being left standing well out from the footpath, and it was considered likely that the Telegraph Department would move them to the line of the footpath, and in doing so would have to lop off some of the branches of the trees and thereby disfigure them. Yesterday morning representatives of the Association interviewed Mr D. E. Parton, telegraph engineer, and discussed the matter with him. As a result of the representee tions made Mr Parton stated that the department would be willing to cooperate witli the W«Jmairi Comity Council by agreeing that one set of poles should carry the telephone wirea and the county's electricity transmission line and that the poles should be erected on the western side of the lane. The Beautifying Association's representatives expiered their appreciation of the department's attitude in the matter and were pleased that the department had shown its sympathy with those who had the interests of the. "city beautiful" at heart.
