Appointments Committee, The report of the Appointments Committee, which was adopted, stated that a letter was received from the Department, authorising establishment of a school at Wallis siding, provided that there was no cost to the Department for a building. It was resolved to express the opinion that if the residents provided a building, the Department should at least pay a reasonable rent for it. A letter,,was received from the Department, authorising the employment of an assistant teacher and the rent of a hall at Hari Hari. Buildings Committee. The report of the Buildings Committee stated that the Department had advised that a grant had been made for the rebuilding of the Moonlight School. It was resolved to state, in reply to the committee's application for erection of a teacher's residence at Taylorville, that there was no prospect of the proposal receiving thefavourable consideration of tho Department.- The Department'advised, a grant for additions to the school at Eotherham, and it was resolved to call tenders for this work. An application was received from the committee for erection of a teacher's .residence at. Waikuku. It was .agree<L :to forward a copy of the committee' 3 letter to the Department, with a re--quest that the proposal receive favourable consideration. An application was received from the teacher for erection of a portable residence at Carew, and it was resolved to apply to the Department for a grant for this purpose. The Coldstream Committee asked that the Board set aside a permanent school Mite, as the present one was only leased. It was resolved to request the committee to decide on a suitable site and to submit full details, wheD tho matter would be referred to the Department for its consideration.' A report was received from Messrs Peverill and Thompson, who had visited the • Lyttelton Gaol site in conjunction with the Controller of Prisons, Mr McCombs, M.P., and Borough Councillors, regarding the proposal to acquire the north-east wing of the old gaol site at Lyttelton in addition to the area already set apart. The report recommended that application be made to the Prisons Department, through the Education Department, for the balance of the site as suggested. It was also de-

cided to ask that no mora spell be removed from tho site. A letter was received from the New Brighton Main School Committee asking if the Board nnd Department would each find one-t:.ird towards the erection of a shelter Bhed at the school, estimated to cost £7O, the committee to find the balance. It was resolved to adhere to the decision conveved to the committee in April, viz., that half cost be raised by means of voluntary contributions, on which a subsidy would be available. A deputation from the New Brighton South School Committee waited on the Buildings Committee regarding the necessity for erection of a new school at an early date. It was resolved to make an urgent appeal to the Department for a grant to provide two portable rooms, as those at Shirley would not be available for some time to come. A deputation waited on the Buildings Committee regarding the erection of a new school at Southbridge. It was resolved to inform the Department that a new site of 4$ acres could be acquired and that, if sold, the old school and site would probably realise the price of a new site. If the sale were sanctioned, application was to be made for a grant for erection of a new school building. The report was adopted. Agricultural Committee. The report of the Agricultural, Manual, and Technical Committee recommended that steps be taken to establish a manual training centre at Leeston, where it was shown that successful classes could be carried on. To provide a building it was proposed to send an application to the Department asking for permission to transfer one of its portable buildings which would have to be removed shortly from certain schools to Leeston. It was expected that a section with a ninetynine years' lease could be easily secured at a rental of 10s per annum." It was recommended that the supervisor be asked to wait on the Lyttelton Borough Council to explain the position with regard to manual training at Lyttelton, and at the same time make an appeal that something should be done to the Old Colonists' Hall, which was rented by the Board as a building to hold manual classes in. At the present time there was much lumber about the rooms, and the walls were dirty and presented a cheerless appearance. A great deal, might be done to improve the look of the rooms' and thus enhance the value of the work. The report was adopted. Dental Clinic Wanted. A deputation representing the schools in the Papanui district waited on the Board with a request that a room in the proposed new school at Papanui should be set aside for the . purposes of a dental clinic for the use of tho children in the district. The committee was prepared to pay for the cost of maintenance of such a room, and it could be guaranteed that the room would not be kept idle. The chairman said the deputation could take it that the Board was in sympathy with their proposal, but the question was one of finance. The Education Department had refused in most cases to provide a room, School Committees themselves generally doing this work. He advised the deputation to approach, the Health Department in the matter with a view to enlisting their support. As the school was to be erected in the near future, he would advise the deputation to take early action. / Miscellaneous. It was decided to accept an invitation to attend the jubilee reunion of the Clarkville School. It was resolved to support the proposed education court to be held in Dunedin on the occasion of the fOTth.goining.Exhibition. •.Copies of illustrated pamphlets issued by the Canterbury Progress League advertising the resources of the province for distribution overseas were received, satisfaction being expressed at the publications. Several members announced their intention of sending copies abroad.
