INFECTIOUS DISEASES.

RAILWAY CARRIAGES DISINFECTED.

The question of disinfecting vehicles used for public conveyance has aroused some interest in Christchurch of late, and enquiries have been made as to the attitude of the Railway Department on the matters. The point referred to Mr H. Chapman, District. Traffic Manager of Railways, yesterday. Mr Chapman stated that so faf as he knew there wis no railway regulation concerning the subject, but his Department strictly observed the Health Department's stipulation that all cars used for the conveyance of infectious cases should be specially disinfected before they were again used for the* conveyance of the public. For instance, he* said, if a case of leprosy were brought by train from the s&utb. & separate car would be used for the patient. Before this oar was again used it would be disinfected thoroughly, to preclude the possibility of infection. Such was the, rule in all cases where patients suffering from infec ; t;ous diseases were conveyed by th» railways. Of course^. he said, often consumptives and other persons suffer ing from infectious' diseases travelled by rail unknown to the Department. Provision was made to prevent infe2tion in such caaesby the regular anl systematic cleansing of the cfirs. All railway carriages were regularly cleaned out, and a certain amount of disinfectant was added, to the water used for cleansing car floors, etc.
