PROGRESS OF PREPARATIONS.

The iron pipes from England for use in the Drainage Board's big scheme for the extension of the sewers to the outlying parts' of the city and its environs are on board the steamer Norfolk, which has arrived in New Zealand waters, and which is expected to reach Lyttelton early next week. The tenders for excavating and pipelaying, the main ' sewer, No. 10, Linwood, ' and the rising main, No. 11, Wookion, close on the 24th inst. The work in. connexion with the No. 10 sewer' is likely to be the first to. be undertaken, as a supply of concrete pipes will be available as soon as a tender is accepted. The No. 10 main sewer, Linwood, starts at Woodham road, thence by Westenra street to Eiver road, and thence to Eetreat road. Sewage will be pumped from the intersection of Eiver road and Eetreat road 'to the summit of the last-mentionfid •; road. The No. .8 rising main.puraps-';intd the No. 10 main sewer. The Np.Vll'rising main, Wbolston, starts ; at Eandolph street, crosses the Linwqpd Park to the Canal Eeserve - (Linwood avenue), thence to Hay street, ito 'McGregor's road, Eiver road, and Kearney's road to the Drainage Board's farm, a distance, of about two miles.
