WEST CHRISTCHURCH SCHOOL.
JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS.
Committees to arrange for the jubilee "celebrations of the West Christchurch school in September were set. Up at a well-attended meeting of old pupils in St. Andrew's schoolroom-last evening. Mr J. H. Jones presided. The chairman said that the attendance was gratifying. The ..celebration of the jubilee of such a school as West Christchutcli was a much too big an undertaking for a school committee, and the: meeting had been called to further the arrangements. The Director of Education■-•. (Mr J. Caughley) wrote regretting Sis inability to be present at the meeting, but stating that /he would be in Christchurch towards 'the end of the month, when he would with the headmaster (Mr F. D.. Waller) on the proposals.He would: certainly be at the celebration, s _ Mr Waller said that, so far as tilie "arrangements had progressed he had considered that the present pupils should be consulted. They had writ; ten an essay, and"".all had suggested a sports meeting. It had also been suggested that a concert should, be given on the Friday night, while on the Saturday afternoon the new school should be. opened^-when an opportunity would be/given parents to inspect the building and for old • pupils to. re-unite. A conversazione was proposed for the evening. Still another strongly supported, suggestion was that, all the old pupils and. the senior, present' pupils should attend a Sunday service at St. Andrew's Church. Dr. C. Chilton, the first du/x pupil of the school, said that naturally they looked to the present school committee, teachers and pupils in connexion with the celebrations. Any memorial should he with the aim of keeping up the tradition of the school. Dr. Chilton - said that: first a representative committee ". of all periods of the school should be formed.- \v The chairman said that the (following committees had been suggested: Literature (to deal with the history). Sports, Ladies, Social, Finance, and ( Programmes. ~ , ' The meeting decided* to adopt Dr. Chilton's suggestion that 'a" general committee"should be formed 'and that, the- detail committees should select the names. It was agreed that an Executive Committee, consisting r.f the conveners of the various committees, should be formed to work with the present school committee. ■. '; . The meeting,adopted the suseestion that a thanksgiving service should be hold on a Sunday, either prior to the jubilee or after, at St. Andrew's Church. A suggestion was made that ■hhe Rev. G\ W. Jopp.. of Dunedin, an ex-pupil and teacher of the school, should be asked to take part at the service.
