UNION, STEAM SHIP CO. FINED.
(riiBSS ASSOCIATION TBLBGaUt.) WELLINGTON, Juno 10. In the Magistrate's Court to-day, thft Labour Department claimed £lO penalty from the Union Steam Ship Company for an alleged breach o{ the Seamen'® Award in connexion with the carriage of logs front Grafton to New Zealand.
It was stated that a portion of the deck cargo was stowed higher than the r*il of tho ship, and did not have an even surface to walk on.
For the defence it was urged th*t the logs were wanted urgently by the Southland Power Board, and it woe only to oomplete the order that the captain had been persuaded to take them. The Kittawa, wa« licensed to carry 95 tor.s on deck; on this occasion eh® had only 67. ton*. The Magistrate held that there had been a breach. Ho convicted _ the oompwiy, but thought a nominal penalty sufficient. The company waa fined JE2.
