HORSE RACING.

I hold no brief for horse racing. In fact, compared to the Rev. J-. J. North, I'am but a child at the game and he c6uld give me ICO to/1 as to the mode of betting l on horses and win easily. My sole experience has been occasionally to assist at "making up a ticket." At a recent meeting some lady friends talked me into a share of a ticket, as it was cert., etc. After the race going for my share of the profits 1 was told that our horse was still running, whatever that meant. Possibly with a little more experience I should have more luck, but 1 am afraid I am not cut out for the Sport of Kings. I enjoy seeing my fellow-beings at their sports, be it cricket, football, dancing or racing. A nation given to sport in reason is better than one given up to work, work, work like the poor toiler in the "Song of the Shirt. We should be dull indeed without recreations, and a country without any dancing, theatrif cals or racing would be only a Bedlam on a large scale. —Yours, etc., W. H. SAXBY. Christchurch, June 9th.
