SPORTING.

Nominations for tho Australian Jockey Club's Epsom and Metropolitan Handicaps and classic events close today. Nominations for tho Victoria Racing Club's classic events close to-day. Nominations for the Methven T.C.'y Annual Meeting close to-morrow. Handicaps for tho Ashburton T.C.'s Winter Meeting will bo declared tomorrow, and acceptances close on Thursday, at 5 p.m. The club has arranged two special passenger trains to leavo Christchnreh for Ashburton on Saturday at 9 a.m. and 9.20 a.m. The first raco is due to start at 11.10 a.m. Nominations for tho Napier Park P.acing Club's Winter Meeting close on Friday. A Press Association message from Auckland states that the following seratchings have been made for the Auckland Racing Club's Meeting:— Royal Abbey and Tinohoro, for all engagements; "Prince Rufus and Dick, in tho Great Northern Hurdles; Royal Present, in the Cornwall Handicap. Our special correspondent after travelling to Diinedin by the express yeaterdny telegraphed as follows: — The first express from Christchurch ran out of rain before reaching the Eangitata and tho weather -was fine afterwards. The track will be a good winter one, but it will not be boggy for the Dunedin Jockey Club's Winter Meeting. A Dunedin telegram states that Mr J. Bigcins, lias purchased Scion, and tho Boniforra gelding will carry his colours during the D.J.C. Winter Meeting. The meeting of the committee of the Canterbury Owners' and Breeders' Association called for to-morrow evening will not taks place. A northern exchange states that H. Gray will have the mount on Income in the Cornwall Handicap and on Lochson, in the Great Northern Hurdles. J. R. Kaan has been riding the latter in hia work at Elleralie, and this experienced cross-country horseman will bo losing a good mount if Gray takes his place in tho saddle. Last, week Mr W. T. Hazlett engaged three colts in the Australian J.C.'B Derby of 1925, the youngsters being the rising two-year-olds by Boni(imp.), Paper MoneySpring of Erin (imp.), and Solferino— Directoire- respectively, says "Sir Modred." The Bbnifonn—Simper youngster, who ranks as a half-brother to Rasszle Dazzle, Gold Light, and 1 Affectation, was bred and raised at tho Waikanae stud, Wellington, on behalf of his owner, while the Paper Money and Direetoire youngsters were bred and developed in the vicinity of Invercargill.

The English Derby of 1924 will bo run at Epsom to-morrow, and_ the stake attached to the contest will be a record. Dtducting the share that goes to the second and third horses, and the winner's entrance fee, there is left £11,805 for the winner. When forfeits were declared on the last Tuesday in March, some 98 horses were left in, and amoug the number were most of the early fancies Tor the three-year-old classio with the exception of Green Fire, who early in April defeated Salmon Trout and other Spotr ones in ihe Greenham Plate at Newbury. It is quite "likely that Mr MJack" Josl now regrets' having taken Green whose Newbury running w;fta decidedly encouraging, out of the Derby which h© has already won with Sunsfcar and Humorist. Quite unaccountably, Tom Pinclr, an untried brother to Captain Outtle, the Derby wilmer of 192*2, has been ruling favourite for *ome time for to-morrow's race, arid foHowiriz Tumi closely have been Bright Knight, one of last season's unbeaten two-year-olds, Diophon, Donstelon, gfensovino, Hurstwood, and Bucks Yeoman. Other prominent two-year-olds of last season who were still engaged when the last mail left England were Arcade, Caravel, Defiance, Knight of the Garter. Mumtaz Mahal, Salmon Trout, and Woodend, besides some eighty odd lesser lights. Though there are no kings in Germany (says a Reuter Cologne message), and, if the papers are to be believed, there is no money cither, yet the sport of kinm flourishes to an extent' undreamed of ten years ago, and .the monetary turnover at erery rac» jrieecing amounts to fantastic sums. At too first meeting of the season in Western Germany (Nenas) the prices of admission were 8s and 6a (stands and enclosures extra), and the minimum stake accepted by the totalisator was ss, while the first prizes offered were of 18,900 gold marks. The attendance was enormous, as was the betting, stakes of £2OO and upwards being freely made, while the rush for the restaurant and buffet, where choice vintages and delicacies were obtainable, was such that the stock was cleared long before the meeting was over* On Easter Sunday ajid Monday the first -Cologne meeting was due, the highest price (of admission only) being 12b, while the prises in the six races on the first day include six "trophies of hanotu*" and \ 52,000 .gold marks. ™ ,

'Begirding the vmk: of . Epinard to states this year, complete agreement' has been reached -.(saya Beuter) between M. Wertheimer' and Maj Bel- '.: moot*-Mr JV and. Mr M. J. Winn, the of the tbJfee Eoufseit over r wluch: ihe French coit engaged, ag to the conditions ©f:th|ftaces. Epinard will begin training in America in charge of Leigh before that date.

CANTERBURY PARK T.C.'S WINTER MEETING.

■ Tie winter fixture of the Canterbury Park Trotting Club will be concluded at Addingtun to-day. Despite the free «« of tha scratching pen, the acceptances are satisfactory and include plenty of material for intcrestinj: racing. Tho going will be hoary, which is much to bo regretted, aa it will prevent a number of horae3 from being seen to best advantage. Tie field in the King George Handicap is disappointing, only eight horses having been accepted for. Realm, who is' nicely treated, should start favourite, but will find strong opposition from Vilo and Man o' AVer. Fourteen unhopplcd trotters are engaged in the Aviation Handicap. Lottie Direct on scratch is trotting -well at present and of the others lour.g Blake on CCvds and Lee Noma on blvds read well. There v.ill bo a special tram service to and from the the course, and tho first race will start at 11.30 a.rn.
