On Thursday a party of artists Fuller's ■■ : vaudeville and ' the George Wallace Revue Co., gave a programme of music at the Christchurch Hospital. The songs and instrumental items were greatly enjoyed by the patients in the various wards. The Returned Soldiers' Dance in the Art Gallery on Saturday night was well attended. ' The recently elected committee, which was in charge, consists of Mesdames J. S. Keljy, Blackburn, Fleck, G. Wright, and Cummings, Miss Plastone, Mess'rs E: Orchard (chairman), D. Burnside "(M.C.), Blackburn and, Wright (assistant masters of ceremonies), Fleck, Gee. T. Har.tigan, Cummings, and "W. E. Leadley (secretary). The music for the dances was supplied by Willyams's Jazz Band augmented" by the new trick jazz, drummer The extras were played by the Lilac Jazz Orchestra and were much appreciated. Yesterday, Mother's Day, was celebrated at the Y.M.C.A. In the . morning the Rev. W. A. Hay addressed s group of residents, taking as his theme "Mother the Centre of the Home and the Home the Central Factor in our Civilisation." The afternoon gathering was held round a big cheery fire in the cosy corner, with 125 present. Mr A. Borrows, ihe president, occupied the chair introducing the speaker, Mr L. M. Isitt, MP.- The speaker quickly gripped his audience with some humorous remarks' about father's authority in the family group, but quietly brought the fact' home to those present that it was the tireless energy, cheerfulness, and patience of the mother that guided the family group. Mr J. Tennent sang "Mother Machree." The Ladies' /-Auxiliary, under Mrs Adams, distributed buttonholes to those present, in honour of mother, while the Social Committee distributed good cheer with a cup of afternoon tea. PLUNKET BALL AT LEESTON.

The second annual brill, under the auspices 1 of the Ellesmere branch of the Neyv Zealand Plunket Society, was Held in the Leeston- Town Hall on Thursday evening. The decorations comprised three large hoops -with white and tangerine streamers hogging from the centre of the hall. A wealth of autumriil foliage ' the streamers, iVithVjlaborate mural decorations to match. The interior of the lounge room was hung with floral drapings, and electric lights and Chinese lanterns were suspended from the ceiling. Bailey'q. Brass-Band, of five instruments, provided music of a quality that left nothing, to be desired. The patrons were very numerous and the floor was fully occupied., Messrs A. J; Gray and T.. H. Overton', as masters of ceremoriiep, carried out their duties most capably. In the supper room ted streamers predominated with ferns and floral work forming the decorative [ Scheme. ST. SAVIOUR'S BABIES' HOME.

brightly smiling nurses and happy: faced babies was the sight that greeted those who attended tho opening of the St. Saviour's Babies' Home at Sumner on Saturday afternoon. Indeed,;the position of the home and tHe conditions under which it is run, simply make for happiness, and the" 1 citizens of Sumner undoubtedly fc'el proud of the fact that their picturesque seaside resort was chdsen for the site of the new home. After the several speeches,; and ; after his Grace Archbishop Julius had ! declared the home 'open —a dainty afternoon tea was provided for the visitors.
