MINING MATTERS. (SPSCIAL TO "THX JRESB.") GREYMOUTH, April 4. An important development in connexion with co-operativo eoal-mining on the "West Coast is reported. Negotiations are proceeding for the opening of a coal depot in Christchurch, and one of tho parties has concluded arrangements for disposing of its product in this fashion. Personal.

Mrs and Miss Beckett, of Christchurch, are visiting friends at Reefton. Mr James Hughes, a well-known resident of Reefton, died there yesterday after an illness lasting some weeks. The deceased was 50 years of age, and is survived by two " sisters and a brother. Messrs G. W. W. Briscoe arrived in Westport yesterday from Christchurch. They intend to spend a few days trout fishing at Murchison. Ladies' Hockey Club. The annual meeting of the Cobden Ladies' Hockey Club was held last evening in the Fire Brigade Hall, Miss T. Anderson presiding. It was reported that a number of girls had signified their intention of joining tho club. Tho election of officers resulted as follows.—President. Miss T. Anderson; secretary, Miss J. Frederick; treasurer, Mrs E. Carey; club captain, Miss E. Dewar; vice-captain, Miss M. Williams; committee, Misses K. Gordon aird W. Thompson, and ■ officers ex officio; social organisers, Misses A. Ross and M. Williams.

Association Football. Word was received yesterday by the secretary of the Westland Football Association that Greymouth would be allotted a match against the Chineso team' to visit the Dominion this year, provided a guarantee of £IOO was forthcoming. Two members of the executive of the Association who made a canvass of the town, raised the amount in two hours. *■ Karamea Progress League. At a meeting of the Karamea Progress League it was resolved, on the motion of Mr Horrack, that the secretary send a copy of Mr Furkett's report on the Karamea harbour to the Wellington Chamber 'of Commerce, soliciting their support. It was agreed to ask the Tourist Department to place Karamea on the Official Tourist Koad Guide, and the Buller Progress League is to be asked to support this request. The Tourist Department is to be asked to spend a small sum of money in putting a track into the Karamea Gorge, on the Umere side of the river, and to improve the Caves track at Oparara, and to put up a notice on the track to Lake Hanlon, on the KarameaSeddonville road. The Public Works Department is to be asked to complete the remaining 70 chains of the Kara-moa-Collingwood track. It was agreed to support the Nelson Chamber of Commerce in its efforts to have the TadniorWangapeka road completed.

Settlement Stimulated. The amount collected in fees in the Westland Land and Deeds Kegistry Office for the year ending March 31st constitutes a record. This is an indication that the opening of the Otira tunnel has stimulated the sale and subdivision of land in Westland, Keferees' Association. The annual meeting of the West Coast Keferees' Association was held to-night, Bro'. Hendrick presiding. The election of officers resulted as follows: —President, Bro. Hendndc; vice-presidents, Messrs A. S. Dunford and A. H. Hamilton; secretary, Mr I. E. Steel. It was resolved to hold meetings in the Old Boys' Club rooms on Friday evenings. The secretary was instructed to write to the Ktigby Union asking it to provide referees' outfits, and requesting that it ask teams to turn out in uniform colours. Messrs L. Chapman and A. Clarke were elected members of the Association. It was resolved to take drastic action against players using bad language.
