NEW BRIGHTON NOTES.

Tides. It wiU be high tide on the beach today at 4.30 p.m-, and in the nver at 6.V p.m., and to-morrow at 5.23 p.m. and G. 53 p.m. respectively. Miniature Rifle Shooting. The following are the officials appointed by the Ladies' Miniature Rifle Chib at their annual meeting:—Patrons, Mrs Gamble (Mayoress). Mr D. G. Sullivan. M.P., and Mr A. W. Owlcs; presided Mrs F. Kibblewhite: vice-presi-dents, Dr. W. T. Glasgow, Misses G. W. Bishop, H. MeCielland, and W. H. Tisdall- captain, Miss Park; vice-captain, Mrs'stokes; treasurer, Mrs Busche; secretary Mn Marshland; checkers, Mrs Busche and Miss Park; board marker, Mrs MeCielland; committee, Mesdames Sproson, Moses, and MeCielland: coaches, Messrs Bishop and Busche, The resignations of Mrs Brooks, late secretary and Mrs Harding, late captain, were- accepted with regret. Social. A complimentary social was tendered to Mrs Robinson and Mr J. Chegwin by the residents of South Brighton, in recognition of their ready assistance in all matters connected with the welfare of the district. During the' course of the evening the chairman (Mr R Campbell), on behalf of many wellwishers, presented Mrs Robinson with a Doulton salad bowl, and Mr Chegwin with a shaving outfit. An enjoyable musical programme was contributed to by. Misg Weavers and Messrs J. Owett. Pliilpott, Hale, Cov/lin, Woodward, and others. ' Mr S. Grammar acted as M.C. for the dances. Band Concert. For the first time in its history, tho local Municipal Band, under Conductor J. Nuttall, is giving a selected programme from the rotunda, Victoria square, Christchurch, to-morrow, commencing at 8.15 p.m. The band will play the following programme:—Hymn, "Remington" (Duckwcll Colin); march, "C.B. and C.F." (Ord Hume); song, with vocal effects, "Let the Rest of the World Go By" (Ball); selection, "Mifi-non" (Thomas); cornet solo, "The Rosary" (Nevin); overture, "Lustpiel " (Kelaßela); ballad,'' You Remind Me of My Mother" (Cohan); march, "The Iron Division" (Kiefer). Methodist Church. Services will be conducted to-morrow as follows.—ll a.m., Mr F. Spratt; G. 30, Rev. F. T. Read (Communion). South Brighton Ha 11—2.45, Rev. F. T. Read. W.C.T.U. A most enjoyable afternoon was spent by the W.C.T.U. at the resideneo of Mrs Bellamy, Lonsdale street. The guest of honour was Mrs Gibson, late treasurer. An excellent programme was arranged, solos being given by Mesdames Sprosen, West, and Taylor, and Miss Eaglesome. Mr Bellamy spoke of tho untiring and cheerful service Mrs Gibson had rendered during her five years of office, and on behalf of the members presented her with an ebony brush and comb. Mrs Eaglesome also spoke of the good work done bj-' Mrs Gibson, who suitably replied Afternoon tea was dispensed.

Anniversary Concert. In celebration of the anniversary of the local Methodist Church an entertainment was given by the Edgeware road choir in the schoolroom on Thursday evening. The Rev. F. T. Bead presided, and there was a packed attendance. The programme submitted comprised sacred and secular items, including vocal solos, glees, and part songs. Mr Instone gave some amusing recitations, and Miss Osborne, who also acted as accompanist, contributed a pianoforte solo. The choir, under tho conductorship of Mr James, gave "The Soldier's Chonio" and "Mozart's Gloria," and "The Laughing Song." School Committee. The School Committee met on Wednesday, Mr F. "Ward presiding. It was resolved that the secretary again communicate with the Minister, urging that as tho building at Shirley will not bo available for at least four months, steps be taken to provide a building at South New Brighton immediately. The' South Brighton Progress League wrote, protesting against tlie proposed eroction of a building in iron for the purpose of a school,"and forwarded tho names of Mrs A. i\l. Campbell and Mr Thos. Robins, the League's nominees, for seats on the School Committee. Tho lieadmaster's report showed the roll number to be respectively:—North Brighton, 237 ; Main School, (iii 9: Scut!: Brighton, 59. Messrs E. A. Langford and Thos. Robins were appointed a Visiting Committee for the month.

Bridge at South New Brighton. The meeting of residents held in the South Brighton Hall to discuss matters in connexion with the proposal to erect a bridge across the A.voii in the vicinity of Bridge street was well attended. Mr K. Campbell presided. Mr 1). G. Sullivan, M.P., said that at' the request of the residents of the district he had obtained' certain data in connexion with the proposed bridge. The Public Works Department had made :i survey of the proposed site, and prepared an estimate of the cost, which was approximately £10,500. The roadway across the low-lying iiats would be 20ft wide and Hit above high spring tide. The Minister of Marine had sanctioned the erection of a bridge, provided it was built high enough to allow motorboats to pass under it. A rate of 4-Jd in the £ •en the unimproved value would be needed if South Brighton has to pay the whole cost. If the ileathcotc people contributed the cost would be less. Messrs A. W. Searr, W. lTulmc, K. Campbell. J. Osborne, H. A. Glasson, and T. I'obins wore appointed a committee to go into the matter and report.
