CANTERBURY COLLEGE CLUB. Xhe annual meeting of the College Lawn Tennis Club was held last evening, Mr T. W. Cane presiding over a good attendance. I'iie display given oy the ladies was disappointing, in tne ladies' singles Miss E. Partridge was unexpectedly beaten in ker iirst game and Alias vV. Partridge, alter brilliantly deleaunj Alias B. h.n igat (Auckland), was beaten by Miss Ballantyne, of Utago. in the combined doubles, fcieay and Miss E. Partridge reached the final, ■only to lose to fj my tlie and Miss Ballantyne .(Otago). Canterbury College and Otago University thereiore divided the honours with two events each. The standard of tenors, throughout was of a very high order and well up to the best traditions of inter-'Varsity play. In t*ie senior grade inter-club matches, out of eight competing teams Canterbury College were the winners, not losing a match. The team consisted of I. A. Seay, B. B. Loughnan, A. B. Loughnan, and W. R. Robinson. In the A Grade competition the club was not so successful, while in the ladies' inter-club matches, owing to the proximity to examinations, players were not able to keep in practice, and so did not meet, with much success. In interprovinciii matches Seay represented Canterbm-> against Auckland and Utago, while E. and W. Partridge both played against Otago and "Wellington. There was a gckju entry in ail the club championships ar:d the standard of p}ay was cuite satisfactory. Durimr the year Mr T. 13. Straker-Smicii, o: North Shields, England, made a donation to tho club. In addition, Mr StrakerSinith had presented two very fine challenge cup 3, to he known as the "L. S. I Jennings Memorial Cups." | The balance-sheet showed a, small balance I to credit.
The annual report and balance-sheet were adopted. The, election of officers for the ensuing year resulted :—Patron, ■Mr T. D ' Strakei Smith; • president, Mr T. AY. Cane- vicepresidents, Piwessor H. Stewart and Mr Ju. A. Stringer; club capiain, Mr A. M. Spenoer; secretary, Mr R. p. Fish; treasurer, Mr Xi. C. Stephens; committee, Messrs C. J. Hunter, M. J. Burns, I. Innes, -W. R. Robinson, Misses B. and \V. Partridge, and E. Ryburn; hon. auditor, Mr A. \V. Browning. • ■ • It wa3 decided that tickets should be issued for the payment' of the afternlon tea subscription. Mr J. M. Stewart brought up the question of loaning the club's courts to outside clubv He said that during the long vacation the Suburban Tennis Committee used the courts on two Saturdays, and the club members had been unable to get a <nuns. The secretary explained that in future notue of such lending of the courts shoura be posted on the College board, and that two courts should be kept available for clno members. A rooommendation was passed to the committee that the club's grounds be put in ordi>r immediately was passed. ™ secretary was instructed to write to , , • Straker-Smith, of North Shields, .bngland, thanking him for his generous donation -of two challenge cups, and for his interest in tho dub's affairs.
