HAWARDEN EWE FAIR.

A SATISFACTORY SALE. Tlie series of ewe fairs throughout North Canterbury was commenced yesterday at Hawarden. -which will be followed by those held annually at Scargill (to-day), Amberley (next Monday), Waiau (March 11th), Culverden (March loth), Little River (March 18th), Kaikoura (March 24th>. Christchurch (March 20th and 21st). The Hawarden fair was notable last season for a pinnacle of prices being set for several fancy lines of sheep, and a good deal of interest centred around yesterday's fair as to how the prices would compare with those of last year, it may be said that picturesque figures were absent, and the sale for good serviceable lines of ewes was lower than last year, and in most cases from 2s to 2s (id below what sheep of similar quality have been making at Addington at the good markets during the past month. However, the market was veryirregular, and there were cases of wellknown station drafts making within Is and in one case (id per head of what they brought last fair. This occurred where the sheep came forward in goou order, but generally the sheep showed the effects of the dry season, in the case of big lots from well-known stations sufficient in size to allow a buyer to supply his wants with a uniform class of siieep, the market was sustained and in a number ot cases the values were decidedly satisfactory. For small lots, the tail end of farmers' flocks, the market was dragging, and some passings were made. Over 19,000 sheep were yarded. The "draw" commenced with small lots, and it was well on in the afternoon before the bulk of the good sheep were reached. Special lines of four and fiveyear tussock ewes made, as stated, well up to last year's figures. The critical view inclined to the belief that they were the strongest feature of the market, considering the brevity of their future compared with two-tooths. Last season the sky-high price of G7s was paid for a pen of 50 two-tooth Corriedales, sold bv Mr J. K. Forrester. The same breeder's half-breds last season sold at 57s for 138, and yesterday his similar draft at 46s 9d, top price of the day. Probably they were not showing the same density of wool, but were a very even lot. Messrs Evans Bros. (Taruna) sold their draft of 67 two-tooth Corriedales at 42s Cd. Their top pen last year made 465. H. T. Little (Hui Hui) sold a line of 109 twotooth Corriedales at 38s 6d to 395. Last year his figure was 45s 6d. Several outstanding sales were made of four year station ewes. Five hundred of G. L. Rutherford's Macdonald Downs draft of 1200 sold at 38s Id, and last year the whole line of 980 sold at 39s 9d in one lot. Yesterday's sale was a good one on the 6. E. Rutherford's Waitohi Peaks"draft of 412 four year ewes made 365; last year the tops made 36s 6d. Other good sales were W. C. Bridson's two tooths at 465. Cull ewes sold down as low at Bs, whilst quite a number of pens of aged ewes with another vear's service in them at from los to 17s 6d. The big lots were sold later in "the day and the large attendance of the public commenced to dwindle before they were all disposed of. The sale did not conclude until about six o'clock. On the whole, averaging up the sale, it was a satisfactory one. Follffwing are the principal sales:—
