FOR WHITE MEN.
THE AUSTRALIAN POLICY. MR HUGHES IN CANADA. (bt cable—rsiss association coptbight.) (AU3TBALIAN AND N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION.) (Received March 6th, 8.30 p.m.) VANCOUVER, March 5. Mr W. M. Hughes's first speech was an eloquent defence of the White Australia policy, which he declared had proved its own value in Australia's present development, without such serious race problems as would have resulted if coloured nationalities had teen admitted. Mr Hughes added that the Oiient formerly despised and ignored the West. Now it despised, but no longer ignored. Oriental population was increasing at a tremendous rate. This waa a problem for Australia and Canada, hut more so for Australia. The W T hite Australia policy was not aimed against any country. The Pacific had become a strategic world, in which Canada and Australia were stations separated by 6000 miles. There was something exhilarating about this, but also something of a menace.
