COUNTY COUNCILS.
MALVERN. The Malwrn Council met on Tuesday, Cr. H. A. Knight presiding. Tenders had been called for stonebreakiDg 1 on three roads, but owing to harvesting being in full swing, no workmen were availab'.a. These and the road past "feoman's will again offered far tender during the moiiifl. About half a dozen residents in the County have acquired the stray stock habit, and apparently have no use for their cows except at milking time. The stock has become so confident that at last it has reached the extent of destroying Council property. This offence must be punl-ned, and a method has been devised which will give owners a shock and at least temporarily clear "the long paddock." A free demonstration of a tractor at work with a road grader has been offered, but as the Council graders have been laid up far months owing to the dry weather the offer could not be accepted at present. The water-race committee consisting of Ctb. Hawke (chairman), Judd, Cullen. and Adams, paid a full day visit to the Kowai and Hawkins intakes and a comprehensive report from them was placed before the meeting. . . , The Malvern A. and P. Association asked for authority to sub-let part of the building leased by them. This was granted as being in the interest of the district and an improvement to the building. TAWERA. At the monthly meeting of the Tawera County Council, held on Tuesday, there were present-Crs. \V. K. McAlpine (chairman;, W M. Williams, E. M. Johnson, R. Mimken, H. A. Millar, and K. K. Gillnndevs. It was decided to purchase the Post and Telegraph Department's cottage and section at Bea&y for the use of the roadman. A small contribution was made towards the Canterbury Progress League's Publicity Fund. , It was decided to re-fence the King street and main road frontages of Gravel Reserve 971, and to join with the Malvern County Council in spending a limited amount on re-grading two steep terraces on the Boundary road. On Cr. Johnson's motion it was decided not to appoint a permanent roadman for the Springfield Riding at present, but to engage such labour as might be available from time to time in the various parts of the riding. It was resolved to add the statutory ten per cent, to all rate 3 outstanding on March 31st.
