KING EDWARD'S HORSE.
TO BE DISBANDED
(special to "the press.")
WELLINGTON, March 5,
Most appreciative reference to the regiment known as King Edward's Horse was made in a letter to Mr Massey written by Lord Derby before he left the War Office in January last. It will be remembered that most of the overseas mounted regiments were affiliated to King Edward's Horse. Members of the regiment gave valuable and distinguished service in the Great War. Recently the future of the regiment was considered by the Home authorities, who consulted the Premiers of the various Dominions. The only practical- course to adopt seemed to be to allow the regiment to go honourably out of existence, but it was suggested as an alternative to disbandment that the regiment should be continued as a yeomanry unit. This, however, was found to be impracticable, and after carefully reviewing all the circumstances in consultation with the Army Council, Lord Derby felt constrained to advise his Majesty that the regiment should now be honourably disbanded. The King, while greatly regretting the impossibility of resuscitating the regiment as an active unit of the Army, lias reluctantly approved of tho disbanding of the regiment as being the best solution of the problem.
