STOCK FOR ADDINGTON.
(spscm, to ''the pbess.") GREYMOUTH, March 4. South Westland will be well represented at this week's Addington stock sale, as 900 lambs are going forward to-day. These are owned by Messrs J. Adamson, J. Minchan, W. Chinn, and J. McLean, all of whom are farming in the Mataroa-Harihari district. Otira Hall, The Railway Department has ct>mmenced work on the Social Hall at Otira. The site which is being utilised is that approved by the General Manager. The local committee, which considered this scarcely central enough, has abandoned its opposition, in order to have the building expedited. Dobson Coalfield. Further proof of the existence of an enormous field of coal in 1 the Dobson area was secured this morning, when the boring operations being conducted bv Mr W. H. Warburton, on behalf of the Dobson Coal Company at Tomlcie's Creek,- resulted in the location of a promising seam of clean, hard coal, showing a thickness of 111': Cin. The coal was struck at a depth of 293 ft. Personal. Mr and Mrs Hugh Harker and family left this morning for Dunedin, where they will reside in future. Last night Mr Harker was the recipient from the Hokitika Municipal Band of a solid leather suit-case. In making the presentation , on behalf of the band, Mr C. B. Ross, the conductor, referred to Mr Harker's long and useful connexion with the band. Mr J. R. Coburu, who has recovered from injuries he received recently at Marsden, left for Christchurch to-day. The Rev. C. Berry, of Kumara, who intends visiting England, left by today's express. Mr A. H. Paterson, who is giving up his practice as a solicitor in Greymouth, leave's for Christchurch on Saturday. Ensign Lamberton, of the Salvation Army, will shortly resign that position. Mr J. Adamson, of South Westland, was a passenger for Christchurch by to-day's express. •
Rimu Dredge,
It is reported in Hokitika that the last fortnightly wash-ijp of the Rimu dredge resulted in a return of over 1000 ounces of gold. This is the best return for the period yet recorded. « Bowling. In the singles championship at Hokitika, H. Thompson defeated Coles, and thus shares with Bain the honour of having won a section outright. Each has four wins, and play off to decide the champion of the club. Hokitika School Committee. The report of the rector at the last meeting of the Hokitika School Committee disclosed that the roll number was: Primary 357, secondary 77. The increased attendance was causing some inconvenience. It was resolved that the school close for a week at Easter and the term holidays commence on May Bth. i Mining Industry. A shortage of orders is said to be the cause of a temporary stoppage of work at the Stockton mine. Millerton Boxing Association. At a meeting of the Millertoil Boxing Association officers were elected as follows: —President, Mr B. Jones; secretary, Mr T. Porter; treasurer, Mr W. Fowler. It was decided to hold a tourney on the 19th inst, and to match Carr against New Zealand's best feather-weight; also to run four special bouts.
