NEW VICAR WELCOMED.

GATHERING AT ST. JOHN'S. The Eev. J. F. Coursey, who has come from Westport to take charge of the parish of St. John's, was wel. corned by a large and representative gathering in St. John's schoolroom last night. Mr T. W. Eowe was in the chair, and with him on the platform were Archbishop Julius, Archdeacon Haggitt, the Revs. J, Smythe and H. N. Wright, and wardens and members of the vestry. The first speeches of welcome to Mr and Mrs Coursey were made by Mr A. T. Stokes, vicar's warden, and Mr T. J. Bucknell, people's warden. Archdeacon Haggitt, on behalf of the archdeaconry, gave a speech of welcome, and his Grace the Archbishop also spoke. The Eev. E. D. Patchett, on behalf of Chnstchurch Methodists, welcomed Mr Coursey. In reply, Mr Coursey asked the people present to give him all the assistance' possible in carrying out his work. He exhorted them to fill the church on Sunday ajnd practise Christianity, with ardour and devotion. Ho said that he would endeavour to carry on the tradition, of St. John's and hand it to his successor in the same way that his. predecessor had handed it on to him.

JDuring the evening a short musical programme was given and Mesdames Sommers, Wright, and Andrews, and Miss Lowe contributed items.
