OBITUARY.

SIR CORNELIUS WESSELS,

CAPE TOWN, March 2. Sir Cornelius Wessels, Administrator of the Orange Free State, is dead.

Mr, w. a. McLaren. Mr Henry Holland, of Christchurch, has received a cable message from England recording the death, on February 22nd, of Mr AY. A. McLaren, who was well-known in the city, haw inn- founded the firm of W. A. McLaren ,and Co., engineers, St. Asaph street. Mr McLaren came out _to \ew Zealand from the Old Country many years ago, representing his brotners, J. and H. McLaren, Leeds, manufacturers of traction engines, and for some time contracted to carry wool by traction power from several well-known stations in the Upper Rakaia district. After the Christchurch business had been established for some thirteen years, he disposed of it in 1808 when it was formed into a limited ' liability company. Mr McLaren then went "to Australia, and subsequently proceeded to South Africa, where'he acted as supervisor of traction transport in the Boer War. After tiic cessation of hostilities, he went into business as representative for John Fowler and Company, Leeds, and had held that position ever since. Mr McLaren paid numerous visits to Christchurch within recent years, and on the last occasion he said good-bye to his friends prior to proceeding £o England to undergo treatment for heart trouble. He leaves a wife and a daughter, his only son haiving been killed in the Great War.
