LONDON, March 2
Samuel Harris, a diamond merchant of Hatton Gardens, pleaded guilty at the Old Bailey to making false income tax returns. An enquiry disclosed £68,333 concealed profits since 1916, involving a loss of revenue of nearly £40.000.
When informed of the discovery, Harris wrote that no one was more surprised that he was. He forwarded a cheque for £IO,OOO, and offered to pay the remainder by instalments.
