The opening ceremony of the Timaru Boys' High School Old Boys' Memorial Library will take place on March 20th and will be performed by his Excellency the Governor-General.

It has been decided to form a Rotary Club in Wanganui. The Hon. Geo Fowlds presided over the meeting at which the preliminary steps were taken.

Frank William Wilkin, a retired farmer, of Chrisfehureh, has filed a petition in bankruptcy, and a meeting of creditors will be held in the Official Assignee's Office at 2.30 p.m. on 13th. inst.

An adjourned meeting of creditors in the bankrupt estate of Frank Percival Claridge', a grain merchant, Christchurch, will be held on 21th inst. at 2.30 p.m. in the office of the Official As. signee.

It was reported to yesterday's meeting of the Tramway Board that the Works and Traffic Committee had accepted the tender of W. Strange and Co., Ltd., for the supply of uniforms for one year. Tho Board adopted the committee's report. The Tramway Board at its meeting yesterday had before it a letter from the St. John Ambulance Association with reference to the Association's annual appeal for funds. It was decided to vote £3O, the same amount that the Board voted for this purpose last vear.

The performance, in connexion with the Methodist Conference, of the oratorio, "The Creation," takes place tonight (Tuesday.) in the Durham street Methodist Church. It was stated, in error, in yesterday's issue that the performance was to be given on Monday evening.

Casual work appears to be fairly plentiful in Christchureh at, present, and the almost entire absence of registrations of unemployed at the local bureau of the Labour Department seems to indicate that all the labour offering is being absorbed. Infectious and other notifiable diseases reported in the Canterbury and West Coast Health District for the week ended noou yesterday totalled 25, as follows: —Grey: Diphtheria, 4. North Canterbury: Scarlet fever, 7; enteric, 3; tuberculosis, 2; puerperal septicaemia, 2. South Canterbury: Scarlet fever, 1; diphtheria, G. Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P., has received a communication from Mr F. W. Furkert, Chief Engineer of the Public Works Department, to the effect that the preparation of plans for the new post office at New Brighton is being expedited, and it is hoped to call for tenders for the new building at an early date.

A "Wellington message says the Marine Engineers' case, which was to have come before the Conciliation Commissioner last week, has been postponed till the 17th insit. As this is felt. Patrick's Bay, it is possible another postponement will be made. The present postponement is due to some parties being engaged in proceedings in another Court. Proceedings, in the furniture trade have also been deferred with a view to a claim being filed for a Dominion award. A similar position exists in relation to the clothing trade*. The hearing of the storemen's claims opens at Palmerston North to-day. The secretary of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Mr G. T. Bullock), in a letter read before the Tramway Board yesterday, asked the Board to issue a free pass to the Society's inspector on the ground, chiefly, that he was employed in work' of a semi-public character. An instance was cited of the inspector having to travel by tram to remove a sheep that had been run over by a tram-car. On the motion of the Hon. J. Barr, M.L.C., seconded by Mr S. A. Staples, it was decided to reply that the Board regretted that it could not comply with the Society's request, as it received so many applications of a similar nature from bodies discharging public, or semipublic duties. The correspondence portion of an English mail, ex the Niagara, which arrived in Auckland on Thursday, reached Christchureh on Saturday. Papers and other second-class mail matter comprising the remaining portion of the same mail will arrivo hero to-day. Mr J. E. Broadfoot, Chief Postmaster at Christchureh, explaining the discrepancy in the times of arrival here, stated that the letter portion of the mail was sent from Auckland to Wellington by the Main Trunk Express, while the sec-ond-class mail matter, which was bulky and heavy, was sent on by goods train. Mr Broadfoot said that the question of 'sending second-clasg mail matter by the express from Auckland to Wellington had been gone into, but this had been found to be impracticable. The second-class mail matter was very bulky and heavy, and on the ground of expense alone it was not practicable to send it by the express.
