A DRUNKEN BRAWL.

MAN STABBED IN CHEST. (PBESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) DUNEDIN, March 3. On Saturday night a crowd was attracted alongside the over-sea. steamer Paparoa, where a furious fight was in progress, the ship's firemen participating very vigorously. It was a drunken brawl which might have exhausted itself picturesquely and comparatively harmlessly had not a knife been used. A fireman named Arthur.Smith had to have two stitches put in a cut on his chest before he was removed to the Cottage Hospital. Apparently the firemen had freely patronised the local hotels during the afternoon. In the forecastle a dispute arose .and a man named Anton Jacaloni and a stoker named William Henry liriggs repaired to the wharf to fight it out, accompanied by others. Then the principal disputants seem to have more, or less participated. Jacaloni was being hard pressed, and, evidently questioning tho equality of the odds, from his point of view, is said to have drawn a, knife. Smith stepped in to shield Briggs, it is said, and suffered a cut on the chest. Meanwhile the police luid been informed of the disturbance. Soon Constables Souter and Hood appeared on the scene and order was promptly restored. This morning at the Port Chalmers Court, Denton, who did not appeal - , was convicted of drunkenness and fined 20s or three days' imprisonment. Then followed the charging of Jacaloni and llriggs with assault <md causing actual bodily harm on Saturday night. Jacaloni was charged with assaulting Smith, and Briggs was charged with assaulting Jacaloni and causing him actual bodily harm.

After consultation it was decided to remand the cases for hearing before the Stipendiary Magistrate on Friday.
