Social and Personal. Messrs A. S. Elworthy and ,T. P

Xewman were passengers by the express yesterday afternoon. Mr and Mrs J. Peter (Geraldine) are in Christchurch.

Mrs George Murray and Miss M. Murray (Braemar) are in Christchurch. Mr and Mrs George Hamilton (Orari) are visiting Christchurch. Mr and Mrs Lavallin-Puxley, who were the guests of Mrs E. E. Guinness, returned to Ealing on Saturday.

Mrs J. P. Xewman and Miss Brenda Xewman ("Moana") returned to Timaru yesterday afternoon. Mrs Towell (Wellington) is the guest of Mrs J. Lindsay (Bank of New Zealand).

Miss Margaret Tripp (Wai-iti road) returned from Christchurch on Saturday.

Mr and Mrs J. F. K. Jamieson ("Kinnoull," Tycho) have returned from a visit to the Southern Lakes.

The Yen. Archdeacon Jacob and Mrs Jacob were passengers by yesterday's express for Christchurch, en route to England. Mrs J. Thomson and Miss Nancy Thomson (Bidwell street) are the guests of Mrs F. W. Anderson (Opawa). Mrs Gladstone Robinson (Oakwood), accompanied by Mrs Galloway and the Misses Battray (Dunedin), left by yesterday's express for a holiday at the Franz Josef Glacier. Mrs Arthur Turnbull (Christchurch) and Misses Lawson (Auckland) arrived from Dunedin on Saturday and spent the week-end with Mrs D. C. Turnbull (Evans street). They left yesterday for the North. Infectious Diseases. During January there was an epidemic of diphtheria in South Canterbury, 43 cases being notified to tho district health officer (Mr J. Monzies). Of these, 24 were in Timaru and 10 in tho Lovels County. Tho figures for February show that the epidemic has been arrested, only one case being reported in Timaru and eight in tho Lovels County. Of the latter cases six were infected during tho height of tho epidemic, so that during tho past few weeks tho spread of the disease has not been abnormal. Tho following infectious diseases wore reported to the health officer durnig tho month of February, the January figures also being given:— Diphtheria. Jan. Fob. General News, On Sunday night Coleridge power was cut off in Timaru for seven minutes, due to a fault in the south line between Winchester and Coleridge. The area under alternating current in Timaru was not affected seriously, only a flicker talcing place. Farmers are complaining about the dry spell which has been experienced again lately. The Fairvicw district, has been more fortunate than other parts of South Canterbury, however, as rain fell there on two nights last week, nearly half an inch being registered. On Sunday evening the South Canterbury Battalion Band gave an enjoyable concert on the Caroline Bay rotunda. The night was fairly warm, and a largo crowd gathered.

WAIMATB. A meeting of the Waimate Hunt was held on Saturday evening, Mr E. Studholme presiding. A vote of thanks was passed to a retiring huntsman for his services. It was decided to hold the first meet on April 10th. The secretary was instructed to write the South Canterbury Hunt asking if June 3rd would be a suitable date for the combined meet. A sub-commit-tee was appointed to draw up a programme for the steeplechase meeting. The following new members were elected:—Miss I. Rutherford, Messrs H. L Adams, J. F. Twomey, J. Twomey, B. McKee, and M. Mcßeth. The monthly meeting of the Plunket Committee was held on Saturday. Present: Mesdames Studholme (president), Evans, Andrew, d'Auvergne, McLauchlan, Cochrane, Hobbs, Hayes, Stewart, Adams, and Manchester. A notice from the secretary of the Timaru branch that a conference of branches would be held in Timaru on March oth, was received. The Oamaru branch wrote asking for particulars regarding the moonlight carnival run by the Carnival Committee.
