' 'i'ii<- M.->! key's Pave," an eclaptation of rr- of W. "W. Jacobs's short stories, though d.fferin-/- in character from the headliner, appeals quite as. powerfully to the emotions. Tin- st. .rv is not in tho author's usual stvle in that it has nothing to do with seafaring life, but deals with a wonderful talismanio nionkev's paw t he who possesses it enn have three wishes fulfilled, rn matter what form i-iic'/i wish lakes. Tlie Calcutta- ber/ear from whom it wos obtained by two British Tommies, evidently had not tested its efficacy for his chant was that he was content, and the Bequel ohowg that content rarely followed tlie fronting of fhe three wishes. It would spoil the effect of the story t> further outline it; a *-:ai of the fnjovmont resulto from the unexpected hatithat follow file expression of the ■wishes of a commonplace old coup'e into whosp possession the magical paw comes. Tragical as well as surprising are those happer.ingfi; at the sama time, exquisitely touching is {he mother love shown by the old lady, and almost equally so is the loving tenderness of the husband. Not the least pleasing feature ot the production is the admirable cast by which it is interpreted; the old couple, especially, are pourtreved with charming naturalness. The current "Fox News," which rounds off tho programme, is well up to etandard for variety and interest. _ "The London Scottish" (Haines), a pleaainp'y tuneful composition, was the overture. and the entr'acte was "A Musical Switch (Alford), which proved highly populsjr. Otiwr Heme wero "Apple Blo»»oms,- a selection or well-known melodies oy the famous violinist Kreisler, "Cendrillon," one of charming orchestral suites, Liza. Lehmann s "Cobweb Castle," Yo-rM's "Serenade ' notSble for the pleasing (inet between cello and 1 flute two operatic selections, "11 Trovatore_ fVerdi) and "Lucia di Lair.mermoor" (Donieettn. Friedmann'fl "rilnvonic. Rhapsody, und "Serenad- d'Amour." The same programme will be friven for the remainder of Ihe week.

GRAND THEATRE. 'The Man They Could Not Hang," a completely new film version of tho remarkable life «tory of John Leo, heads the current programme of motion pictures at the Grand Theatre. It is a brand new production, showing sceneß photographed in the Torbay district, Mid-Devon. It is the authentic history of the well-known Babbacombe tragedy. The picture is replete with pathetic incidents, re.ieved here and there with a touch of humour; the humorous portion being chiefly in John Lee's boyhood day 3, whilo among tho pathetic parts are those which show the unswerving loyalty of hia fiance and the faith of his aged mother in her belief in the innocence of her son—a belief which she lived to see realised. As the story of a grievous wrong done to an innocent man, the picture provides food for ■erious thought. As a dramatic production it is excellently acted, and from a Photographic -point ot view it is first-class. r\£>iccadilly Jim," featuring Owen Moore, is another fino Elm.

STRAND THEATRE. The Strand Theatre i 3 showing another excellent progr-unmo of pictures this week. Hoot Gibson has the leading role in ".Bandits Beware," and Priscilla Bean in "The FJame of Life," a, story of a young girl's battle for existence in it coal-mining village.

"Horse Toars," a hilarious comedy; another exciting chapter of "The Oregon Trail," and an International News constitute tho supporting programme
