IN RAILWAY TENDERS.

Following on a German firm's success in securing a contract for the supply of locomotives for India comes news that an Italian firm is the successful tenderer for 30 locomotives for the Egyptian State railways.
Thirty-one firms competed, including nine British. The lowest tender, which ivcs accepted, was from a Milan firm, at £3S4O each. British tenders ranged from £5043 to £7035. It is believed that after the closing of the tenders a German firm quoted by telegraph even lower than the accepted price. "The Times,'' commenting on the subject says: —"That foreign firms should have secured contracts in what were hitherto regarded as strong British markets is disquieTing."

A largo order for railway material, including rails, tyres, axles and waggons, for the Union Government, has been secured by German manufacturers.
The sum involved is considerable. British firms wero completely out of the running.
