KAIKOURA ROAD.
KOWAI BRIDGE TO BE LENGTHENED.
Mr G. W. Forbes, M.P., interviewed the Minister of Public Works on Saturday at Wellington, relative to the urgent need for reconstructing the bridges on the Christchurch-Kaikoura road. The Minister assured Mr Forbes that no effort would be spared to put the road in order for the winter.
Mr Forbes is in receipt of the following letter from the Minister of Public \Vorks: —"On January 25th you telegraphed to me stating that the approach to the Kowai river bridge, KaiKoura, was in a bad condition, making crossing very difficult, and you requested that instructions be given for its repair. In-reply ; I have now the honour to inform you that this bridge is to be lengthened by 100 ft, and until this is done it is impossible for tho permanent approach bank to be constructed. The timber for the bridge extension is at present on order and upon receipt of same the erection will be proceeded with with all possible despatch. In the 'meantime a reasonable endeavour will bo made to keep the river under the existing length of bridge and to keep t«ie temporary approach in fair order.
