TUNNEL RATES.
CHARGE ON CONTINUOUS MILEAGE.
MINISTERIAL ANNOUNCEMENT.
The Hon. J. G. Coates, Minister of Railways, telegraphed as follows yesterday to Mr P. It. Climie, the organiser for tho Canterbury Brogress League:—
"Arrangements have now been made, commencing on Monday next, the 18th inst., for all goods between East and West Coast to be charged cn continuous mileage at gazetted rates at present (in operation, plus percentages." These very important announcements will be welcomed by all users of the Midland line and coming at the present juncture when rumours are in circulation to the effect that a special tunnel rate was to be imposed, it is particularly gratifying. It is gathered from the Minister's telegram that on and after Monday next the East and West Coast railway will be placed on the same footing, as all other lines in'the Dominion in respect of the rates charged for the conveyance of goods.
